Neville of Thornton Bridge

The recently published RPA/PA3 shows a descent for the family of Neville of Thornton Bridge which is rather different than those previously published. There now appear to be [at least] three versions of the descent of this family.

From Surtees' History of Durham, 4:163:

Ralph Neville, Lord Neville of Raby

Sir Ralph Neville of Condell

Sir Alexander Neville of Thornton Bridge (will dated 1457); m. Katherine NN

Sir William Neville of Thornton Bridge (knighted 24 July 1482); m. Johann NN

Ralph Neville of Thornton Bridge; m. Anne, dau. of Sir William Gascoigne

Ralph Neville of Thornton Bridge; m. a dau./co-heir of Christopher Ward of Newby and Givendale

[3 daughters, co-heirs]

From an article and pedigree in The Genealogist (new series), 33:9-15, described by its author as 'tentative":

Ralph Neville, Lord Neville of Raby

Ralph Neville, 3rd son [indicated to possibly the same as the next Ralph]

Ralph Neville (IPM 1380); m. Elizabeth de Ledys [Leeds]

Sir Alexander Neville (b. ca. 1358-9, d. before 1420); m. Margery NN (d. 1425)

Sir Alexander Neville (will proved June 1457); m. Katherine, dau. of Sir Ralph Eure (d. 31 Aug 1459)

William Neville (b. ca. 1426, living 13 Oct 1457)

William Neville (under age 13 Oct 1457); m. Joane, dau. of Sir Christopher Boynton

Sir William Neville (knighted 1482, dead 1484); m. Alice NN

Ralph Neville of Thornton Bridge; m. [?] Anne Gascoigne

Ralph Neville of Thornton Bridge (IPM 1522); m. dau. and co-heir of Christopher Ward of Newby

[3 daughters, co-heirs]

The new RPA cites both of the above sources but then lays out a rather different descent without explanation:

Ralph Neville, Lord Neville of Raby

Sir Ralph Neville of Thornton Bridge (d. ca. 1362); m. Elizabeth de Leeds (d. ca. 1369)

Sir Alexander Neville (d. ca. 1420); m. Margery NN (d. 1425)

Sir Alexander Neville (will proved June 1457); m. Katherine, dau. of Sir Ralph Eure (d. 31 Aug 1459)

William Neville (b. ca. 1426, will dated 1468/9); m. Joan NN (d. shortly before 20 July 1479)

Sir William Neville (knighted 1482, d. 21 May 1484); m. (1) Joan Boynton; m. (2) Alice NN

Ralph Neville (d. 24 July 1522); m. Anne (d. by 26 Oct 1521), dau. and co-heir of Sir Christopher Warde

[3 daughters, co-heirs]

I suspect that the RPA version may in fact be more accurate than its two predecessors (and no doubt its author will say without hesitation that he's right!), but it would be useful to have a better idea of WHY this is so - particularly with respect to whether there were 1, 2, or 3 Williams and (after the Williams) whether there were 1 or 2 Ralphs. RPA's sources for these generations don't appear to support its conclusions.

Can anyone shed any light on this?

Dear John ~

Can anyone shed any light on this? Yes, John, I can help you.

Below are six documents relating to the Neville family of Thornton
Bridge, Yorkshire which I found just now in the helpful A2A catalogue
at the following web address:

http://www.a2a.org.uk/search/index.asp

Items #1-3, 5-6 are taken from Lancashire Record Office: Hornby
Catholic Mission Papers (St Mary's Church). Item #4 is taken from
Leicestershire, Leicester and Rutland Record Office: Peake MSS.

These six items support the basic pedigree of the Neville family found
in my book, Plantagenet Ancestry. The fourth item in particular
corrects Surtees' pedigree of the Neville family which is found in his
History of Durham. This item also indicates that members of the
Thweng family of Yorkshire were involved with William Neville, Esq.
(died 1469) and his wife, Joan. If so, this could be a pointer to the
identity of Joan Neville's maiden name.

For those interested in obtaining a copy of my Plantagenet Ancestry
book, they may contact me offline at my e-mail address below for
details.

Best always, Douglas Richardson, Salt Lake City, Utah

Dear John ~

Last night after I posted a reply to your request for help regarding
the Neville family of Thornton Bridge, Yorkshire, I located several
more items pertaining to this family in the useful online A2A
Catalogue (website: http://www.a2a.org.uk/search/index.asp), as well
as the online National Archives Catalogue (website:
http://www.catalogue.nationalarchives.gov.uk/search.asp). I've copied
all eight items below.

Item #7 comes from the National Archives Catalogue. The remaining
seven items (Items #8-14) are pulled from the A2A Catalogue. Again,
as with the first six items, they support the pedigree of the Neville
family found in my book, Plantagenet Ancestry.

In this batch of documents, the most interesting item appears to be
Item #12 which is an abstract of the inquisition post mortem for Sir
Alexander Neville taken March 23, 1458. It shows that Sir Alexander
died on the eve of Corpus Christi "last past," and that he was
survived by his son and heir, William Neville "the elder," then aged
32.

Sincerely, Douglas Richardson, Salt Lake City, Utah

Re: Neville of Thornton Bridge

Legg inn av John Higgins » 15 okt 2004 20:59:33

These newly found bits of information are interesting and add flesh to the
pedigree of Neville of Thornton Bridge, but they only narrow the question of
conflicting pedigrees cited by RPA and don't totally resolve it. It's clear
that the Surtees pedigree of Neville cited by RPA is inaccurate. No
surprise there - although it begs the question of why RPA cited it without
at least noting that it was inaccurate.

There still remains the other conflicting pedigree cited by RPA: the one by
Canon E. L. Nevill in "The Genealogist" (new series). If I read these new
items correctly (both batches), all of them can fit with either of the two
pedigrees equally well. Most of the items refer to a particular individual
without indicating relationships and thus don't argue in favor of one
pedigree or the other (see items 1 thru 3, 7 thru 11, and 13 and 14).

Items 4 and 12 do provide some relationships for the William Nevilles, but
they too can support either version of the pedigree. The same is true for
items 5 and 6 which refer to Ralph Neville and his wife Anne, but don't
indicate why we should believe there was one Ralph and Anne rather than two,
as in the Canon Nevill pedigree cited by RPA. There may well be reasons for
this conclusion, but they aren't apparent from these new references or from
the sources cited in RPA.

I don't particularly care what the right answer is - I just believe that any
answer should be adequately documented. As I said before, I suspect that the
RPA pedigree may in fact be right (particularly with respect to the
Williams), but the sources that it cites don't support that conclusion - and
this new list of references doesn't seem to resolve the matter.

32.

For those interested in obtaining a copy of my Plantagenet Ancestry
book, they may contact me offline at my e-mail address below for
details.

I have a question, on some of these things listed below I see East Riding in
Yorkshire, I have also seen reference to north riding, can some one tell me
what does "Riding" mean in this context?
Thanks

Yorkshire (like Gaul) was divided into three parts: the North Riding,
the East Riding, and the West Riding. The word 'riding' was originally
'thridding', meaning a third part.
