Hello David and John
First of all:
Calendar of Miscellaneous Inquisitions Henry III and Edward I
p259/260
Hundred of Newarke.
Nottingham, Tuesday after St Denis 49 Henry III (13 October, 1265)
'The lands of John de Deyvile in Landeford were seized by Sir William
de Grey after the Battle of Evesham and before the Exaltation of the
Cross because he was keeper of the county of York by the appointment
of the barons. The lands, &c. are worth 4 marks. Sir William de Grey
received 26d. in Michaelmas rent'.
John de Deyvile was still in possession of Landford (Langeford) up to
1265.
I thought that I had the Constable lineage pretty much nailed but I am
now not 100% again? The research that I have been doing it is
important that I determine the Eyvil/Constable connections correctly.
There are definitely I can now see at least a couple of separate
Robert le Constables in the mid 13th century, possibly more?
William le Constable of Halsham definitely had a son called Simon who
is given a birthdate of 1243 and did die in 1294.
c1260 Halsham
'Nicholas son of Robert de Brustwick to his chief lord Sir Simon le
Constable, property all his meadow in West Halsham in a place called
Stokker. Wtn. Sir John de Melsa, Sir Armand de Rudas, Sir John de
Passemer, John de Ottringham, Stephen de Oustwik, William son of
Martin de Grimston, John Ward of Esthalsham'.
The date of this above deed cannot be correct as William le Constable
was involved in a assize dispute in 1260 and appears at the Eyre in
1268 in an entry that I found. Simon was not the chief lord in 1260.
That said the William from 1268 could be the son William possibly?
There is a deed on the East Riding Archives site from the 1260's which
refers to Simon le Constable and William his brother. Another refers
to a William son of William le Constable. This must be surely the same
William le Constable, son of William.
c1240
Ouitclaim for 25 marks
'Thomas of Alost to Robert son of William the Constable, property 3
carucates in Erneburthburton (Burton Constable), 3 carucates in Neuton
near the same Burton. 2 carucates in Tarletorp. 2 carucates in Marton.
Wtn Walter of Falkenburg, John of Melsa, Adam of Horne, John de
Lascel, John of Harpham, John of Audebor' (Aldbrough), Nicholas of
Chaningours, Robert of Witon, William of Rue, William of Arennes,
Hubert of Flinton, Walter of Caretorp, William of Cadenei, Peter of
Keteby, William of Couplands Golding'.
This is the Halsham Constables again, Flinton, Marton, I am very
familiar with all these names and places, so William does have a son
called Robert le Constable. The date is suspect though has if Robert
is the son of Cecily Tweng, then they only married in 1228 and Robert
here would be only about 10/11 years? Would he be receiving lands at
the age of ten?
William le Constable of Halsham b1205 definitely had sons Simon,
William and Robert so far.

Hi All
Rob has sent me this to drop into the system as a follow-up to his
previous post:
"Hello John, David
All these deeds are on the East Riding of Yorkshire Archive.
29 September 1268, Killum
'Bartholomew de Kayton and wife Agnes, daughter of Robert de Pokethorp
to Geoffrey the Constable, son of William the Constable property, 1
bovate and 2 tofts and crofts in Killum about which there has been a
case between them in the court of Killum. Covenant for payment of 1
mark silver if Geoffrey is disturbed in tithe by any brother of Agnes
and a half mark to heirs of Richard de Middleton'.
Marmeduke de Tweng gave a gift of land at Killum to William le
Constable of Holderness on the marriage to his daughter Cecily in
1227. This is a Geoffrey son of William le Constable of Halsham. Same
William.
William le Constable now has sons Simon, Robert, William and Geoffrey.
There is possibly another called Richard who I am going to check on to
confirm?
Who on earth is this then has this is not Robert le Constable son of
William le Constable of Halsham?
c1260
(Gift). John the Constable rector of Holm to Robert son of Robert the
Constable of Flamburg, property, all property in Holm which he had of
the gift of John de Arnest, property. Wtn. William de Liversleg'.
There are several Robert le Constables around 1260-1270.
1259
(Gift). John son of Nicholas de Arnesnest to John the Constable son of
Robert the Constable, property: 4 selions on the hill in Arnesnest,
which Muriel de Arnesnest held of him in name of dower rendering 6d
yearly. Wtn. William de Holm.
There is a strong appearence here that Robert son of Robert the
Constable and John son of Robert Constable could be brothers, both
sons of the Robert the Constable?
How is the father Robert le Constable related to William le Constable
of Halsham?
Yorkshire Fines 1218-1231
3 Nov 1226, At York, the same day, before the same justices.
CCLVIII- Between Symon Constable, plaintiff and William Constable,
impedient, as to 2 caruactes of land in Flotemanby.
The rights of Symon, as of the gift of Robert Constable father of
William, to hold to Symon for life, of William and his heirs, paying 1
mark of silver yearly, at Whitsuntide and Martinmas, for all same
forinsec service, to revert to William and his heirs on the death of
Symon. Symon gives half a mark of silver (Bundle 21, No 161)
There is another earlier Simon le Constable to the one who died in
1294. The William Constable mentioned here, son of Robert le
Constable, who can that be other than William le Constable of
Halsham/Holderness b1205. This Simon may be the brother of William
possibly? There is a deed which mentions William le Constable, Fulk
his brother. Fulk le Constable was taken prisoner at Kenilworth after
Evesham and lost his lands at Flotemanby in one of the Inquisitions.
This William and Fulk are the brothers.
William le Constable of Halsham b1205 probably had a brother Fulk le
Constable (still living 1265/66) and possibly another brother Simon le
Constable.
Juliana Deyvil is listed in deeds post 1267 has the widow/wife of
William le Constable and the mother of Robert le Constable. This must
surely be William le Constable of Halsham has in the 1220's, William
did have lands at Killum, Flotemanby which are near other Constable
lands at Nafferton. I can provide entries from the Curia Regis Rolls
outlining a dispute involving William le Constable, Richard de Percy
and his lands at Nafferton in 1225.
William le Constable was still married to Cecily de Tweng in 1240. He
has either been married to Juliana Deyvil, had his sons and divorced
by 1227 and then remarried her again after Cecily, or he has married
Juliana after 1240 and Robert le Constable her son was born definitely
after that date? The first idea scenario sounds somewhat ridiculous,
the second totally feasible.
The Robert le Constable mentioned has a knight in 1246 must be one of
the Roberts mentioned in the two entries earlier but how Robert, and
Robert and Geoffrey son of Robert are related to the other Constables,
William, Simon and Fulk? I wonder if the older Robert is another
brother of William, Simon and Fulk?
William le Constable of Holderness did have lands close to Flamborough
in the 1220's. He must have given some of his lands to his brothers,
Fulk received Flotemanby for example, Simon also land in Flotemanby.
By 1285 in the Charter Rolls, Simon le Constable, heir of William le
Constable was not in possession of the lands at Killum, Flotemanby,
Nafferton. The lordship of William le Constable is probably/possibly
the point where the two Constable families diverged? The lands were
divided up.

Dear David, Rob, et al.,
First, welcome to the list, Rob.
I've had a little time to look over your post from yesterday, and yours
(David's) from this morning, and have gone back to my notes on the
Constables of Halsham and Burton Constable. I think I have an accurate

I will review your posts against this material a bit later, but should
you have a chance to correlate same meantime please feel free to correct or
amend the above.
There are many problems involved in keeping these Constables separate
from the family of Flamborough; however, it is evident that these are two
separate families. The Constables of Flamborough come from the family of
the former constables of the Earls of Chester; evidently, Ulbert or a near
predecessor functioned as a constable to someone else, presumably in
Yorkshire. Given his lands in Holderness, I'd guess this was as constable
to the Earl of Aumale (the overlord of Holderness).
Cheers,
John

Dear David, Rob, et al.,
First, welcome to the list, Rob.
I've had a little time to look over your post from yesterday, and yours
(David's) from this morning, and have gone back to my notes on the
Constables of Halsham and Burton Constable. I think I have an accurate
(if partial) reconstruction of that family down to ca. 1400, as follows:

Cheers,
John
