Hilton of Hilton, and Hilton of Swine and Winestead

Hello All,

Following is the pedigree of Hilton of Swine and Winestead, from the
first of this line (Sir William de Hilton, d. ca. 1291) until it's
daughtering-out with the issue of Sir Robert Hilton (d. 1431).

Specific issues, problems, and corrections regarding this pedigree as
shown are as follows:

1. The first wife of Sir Robert de Hilton (d. ca. 1351) is identified
by Poulson as a daughter of Ralph de Greystoke, presumably meant to
be Sir Ralph fitz William (d. 1316/17). However, chronology
indicates she was born say 1295-1305, and IPM evidence shows
she could not have been the daughter of Margery de Bolebec (cf.
CP V:514-516). She is therefore shown as a daughter of Robert fitz
Ralph de Greystoke (d. 1317), son of Ralph.

2. Sir Robert Hilton (d. bef Feb 1400/01) is 'better known' as the
husband of Constance de Mauley, which Adrian Channing noted
recently (citing a correction in CP XIV). However, the account
of this individual and his family indicates that Constance de
Mauley could not have been the mother of his older children, and
possibly did not bear any issue in this marriage.

This issue will be dealt with in the next post to this thread.

The Hiltons of Swine and Winestead have a number of colonial (American)
emigrants amongst their descendants, as well as the late Queen Mother and her
progeny.

Cheers,

John
