Burke's Irish Family Records states that the Johnston family of
Kilmore House, co Armagh, "has claims to be the sr Irish branch of the
Scottish House of Annandale."

The family is derived from:

"THE REV THOMAS JOHNSTON, Min of the Scottish Kirk, settled in Ireland
ca 1621, living at Dromore, co Tyrone, with a pension of £100
(according to Civil Establishment Records in Dublin Castle 1654-57);
yr son of Sir John Johnston, Kt (1548), of Dunskellie, by his wife
Margaret, dau of Sir Walter Scott, yr of Buccleuch, and uncle of James
Johnstone, 1st Earl of Hartfell (see BURKE'S Dormant and Extinct
Peerages, ANNANDALE, M); m, and had issue,"

I can't find reference to this Rev Thomas in any Johnston pedigree,
though. Is there any evidence that Sir John J of Dunskellie had a son
Thomas? I imagine a pension of £100 was fairly substantial around 1621
and would imply good connections.
