Hi John, Tod, Rosie, Chris and others

Some time ago John R. proposed a
de Braose - Wingfield - Pole connection,
which generated a lot of discussion.

For ease of explanation, I outline a summary

John R. noted that this proposal
show(s) two Richard de Breuse/Brewes (one the husband
of Alianor [de Shelton], the other the husband of the
conjectured Katherine). It is possible that this
Katherine is an erroneous assignment, due in part to
the multiplicity of Katherines as you've noted.

The basis for assigning Katherine as being the wife of
Richard de Brewes was the fine levied in 1377, cited
by Copinger and Chris Phillips, namely:

"1 Richard 11, no 12 [c. 1378]
John de Fordham, clerk, John Bacoun, clerk, John
Daventre, parson of Brome church, Walter, vicar
of Kymberle church, Edmund de Lakyngheth, Stephen
de Langham, Richard Nootz, and John Cranewys v
Katherine Brewse of the manor of Wyngefeldhalle in
Wyngefeld."

I have recently found some further references that
clearly identify this Katherine Brewse [OF THE
1377 FINE] as being the daughter of Thomas
Norwich who was the son of Walter de Norwich, knt,
[Cal Pat. 1375, p78, Cal. Pat. 1377 p31,
Cal Pat. 1380, p536, Cal.Pat.1384, p440-441,
Cal. Pat. 1384, p457,
Cal. Inq.p.m. 1-7 Ric p87-90,
Cal. Inq.p.m. Edw. XIV p 43-45,
and Cal inq.pm. XIII, p92 ].

From these it is clear that she was born in 1342
and that she entered the Dartford Nunnery in
1379 at which time her heir was William de
Ufford her cousin.

Thus this Katherine de Brewse [OF THE
1377 FINE] was clearly NOT the mother
of Alianor de Brewes from the point
of view of inheritance and chronology.
However, she may have been the second
wife of Richard de Brewse by whom she had
no living children in 1379, and she was holding
the manor of Wingfieldhall in dower.

Unfortunately, there is no mention of Wingfield
in these references, so at this stage we cannot
establish whether she obtained this manor
by means of dower or by inheritance.
Furthermore many of the lands of her heir
William de Ufford upon his death were granted to
Michael de la Pole. So whether Wingfieldhall
passed to Michael de la Pole via Ufford or
via Katherine Wingfield is difficult to ascertain.

Notwithstanding, I think the descent still holds true,
with the exception of this Katherine de Brewes.
