Thank you all for your thoughts on whether the Normans were french or not!
Here's another one to throw into the fray!
The speculation on the 'death' of William Rufus has it widely claimed that
Walter Tyrel, Walter Tyrel (II) Seigneur de Poix, to give him his full
patronymic and title(if indeed, patronymics had become the norm....)shot at a stag,
missed and shot the King instead.
The only way that this could have been the case was that Tyrel told the
story - He later refuted that he was hunting with the King.
Was Tyrel French? He was from Picardy but married to Adelise Giffard.
Any thoughts on this?

Dear Newsgroup,
I doubt there as as little proof of William II
Rufus` hunting accident /possible murder as of the murders at Richard III`s
command of Edward V and Prince Richard by either Richard III, Henty VII or a
case of plain old pneumonia. Also I`d always read that the soon-to-be Henry I
was also along and galloped full speed back to London to have himself appointed
his brother`s successor.

Ahem! Have you not heard of Sir Thomas Moores account of the demise of the
Princes? Odd coincidence, but another Tyrell arranged the hit, though hired two
heavies to do the dirty work. He was later chopped by Henry Tudor.... I wonder
if they were related?
Cheers
