Mamikonian ancestry of Michael III?

Legg inn av Mark Harry » 02 okt 2004 10:54:07

I have noticed going through the SGM archives that Michael III has
been credited with Mamikonian ancestry though his mother, the empress
Theodora. Is this definitely the case, or is it just a theory? I ask
because I have been reading Judith Herrin's work "Women in Purple",
which deals extensively with Theodora, and also John Norwich's
"Byzantium: the Apogee" and I don't recall finding any mention of
Mamikonian ancestry in either of those two works, although Herrin from
memory indicates an Armenian connection for Theodora's father Marinos.
A search in the SGM archives under "Marinos & Mamikonian" and
"Theodora & Mamikonian" failed to ascertain the reasons and evidence
for any claimed Mamikonian connection. Is anyone able to shed any
light on this?
Thanks
Mark Harry

It's been studied in 'Nos Ancêtres de l'Antiquité' by Christian Settipani.

Thanks for the material you sent me, I am responding this way as I
can't get messages out of yahoo for some reason. I was able to get a
rough translation of the french notes using the "babelfish"
translator. What is the further material you refer to?
