Fw: OT Duvall Question

Legg inn av Jeffery A. Duvall » 22 sep 2004 08:50:23

Sorry for the confusion. I simply forgot to delete the Bonaparte from the
subject line the first time I replied.

I've checked my database this evening and as far as I can determine there is
no (obvious) connection between Robert Duvall and the Lees, at least not
that I've recorded. If it exists at all it's through one of the wives and
I've never bothered to research their ancestry (as it's rather removed from
my own, and for the record he's my sixth cousin both 3 and 4 times removed).

My only Lee connections are all on my mother's side and through the
Towneley, Smith, and Slaughter families. It's possible, however, that some
of my Thornton cousins married into the family.

Hmmmmmmm.

Bob Duvall is a prince among men and one of America's greatest actors.
His dad was no slouch either -- not as an actor.

I brought up the Bonapartes because you had them in your previous
subject line -- but said nothing about them.

If you were connected to the Lees of Virginia I should think you'd want
to know.

Aloha,

| Hmmm,
|
| Well, without looking it up, I'm guessing my connection to Robert
Duvall is
| something along the lines of 5th or 6th cousin several times removed.
Which
| is part of the answer to your next question: Given the distant
relationhip to
| Robert Duvall (whose connection to my family I've only looked up after
growing
| tired of having relatives asking me over the years if we were related
| because "he looks so much like a Duvall"), I can't honestly say
whether or not
| he's related to the Lees of Virginia. If so, I'm fairly certain,
however, that
| it would not be through the Duvall family itself or through any of the
wives
| of the early generations. If you or he, or whomever, really wants to
pursue
| the issue, the best place to start is Harry Wright Newman's *Mareen
Duvall of
| Middle Plantation* (1952). As for the Bonapartes, I'm not sure I want
to say
| anything about them. I'm afraid I know nothing about Annette Savage
or her
| children, etc. Aside from an ancestor who fought for Napoleon on the
Russian
| Campaign (at 16) and at Waterloo (and always referred to in family
lore as
| his "boot boy" whatever that means), I've no connection to the
Bonapartes and
| have never really made any special effort to study them or the time
period in
| French history.
|
| Cheers,

Thank you kindly.

Well, at least Bob Duvall did a bang-up job playing Marse Robert in
_Gods And Generals_, probably the best performance ever in that role.

Ah yes, the Frank Slaughter family -- the one-time novelist?

I like that story ---- Mareen Duvall The Frondeur.

| Harry Wright Newman certainly viewed the original Mareen Duvall as a
Huguenot
| and tried (I'm not sure how successfully) to link him to a minor
government
| official in Normandy named Marin Duval (or DuVal, can't remember which
| spelling he went with). My recollection is that Newman claimed
(perhaps
| speculated is a better word) that this fellow (Marin Duval/DuVal)
joined the
| Fronde, upon it's failure was ultimately sold by the (French) Crown to
| Cromwell's government, transported to the New World, and wound up in
Maryland.
| It's been years since I've looked at that portion of Newman's book so
I
| apologize if I've garbled the theory a bit.
|
| I also seem to recall that in Maryland the first Mareen was a member
of his
| local Anglican Parish and was accused, late in life, of being a
Jacobite.
|
| Finally, if you look at this url:
| http://members.aol.com/_ht_a/wreitwiesn ... heney.html
|
| You'll find that the Vice President (Dick Cheney) is descended from
two of
| Mareen Duvall's children by his second wife: Samuel Duvall and
Susannah
| Duvall Tyler.

I'm afraid I don't anything about Frank Slaughter or if he's connected in
some fashion to the Slaughter family of Essex and Culpeper Cos., VA. John
Frederick Dorman, editor of the *Virginia Genealogist* might, however, be
able to answer your question.
