An Italian ancestor for everyone?

Pietro I Orseolo, 928-987, Doge of Venice
The misrule of Pietro Candiano left Venice in ruins as well as bankrupting the Republic. Fortunately, his successor, Pietro I Orseolo, a skilful diplomatist and experienced statesman, was a very rich man who added large sums from his own fortune to the taxes he levied to cover the high cost of repairing the devastation. Under his direction work began also on rebuilding both the Doge's Palace and St. Marks's and on the construction of a hospital. He commissioned Constantinople crafts men to make the Pala d'Oro. In the autum of 978, without the knowledge of even his wife and son, he left Venice and made his way to the monastery of Cuxa in the foothills of the Pyrenees. After a few years in the monastery he became a hermit nearby. Forty years after his death he was officially recognised as a saint by the local bishop.

I think he is a very interesting ancestor of many----especially in the genealogical world.
Brice Clagett (USA), Ian Fettes(Australia), John Steele Gordon (USA), Gordon R. Hale Jr.(USA), Malinda Jones(USA), Peter de Loriol (UK), Grant Menzies (USA), Sir Iain Moncreiffe (UK), George Andrew Moriarty (USA), Brom Nichol Jr. (USA), Tim Powys-Lybbe (UK), John Ravilious (USA), Gary Boyd Roberts (USA), Sam Sloan (USA), Louise Staley (Australia), Gilbert von Studnitz (USA), William Addams Reitwiesner (USA), Nathaniel Taylor (USA) and Michael Welch (USA).

But then, sticking to the last 150 years or so, also his descendants are:
Stephen Grover Cleveland, 22nd and 24th President; Theodore Roosevelt, 26th President, Calvin Coolidge, 30th President; Franklin Delano Roosevelt, 32nd President; Gerald Ford, 38th President, George H. Bush, 41st President, George W. Bush, 43rd President.

Eleanor Roosevelt, Steve McQueen, Walt Disney, Audrey Hepburn, Wernher von Braun, Aga Khan IV, Ferdinand von Zeppelin, Graham Greene, Christopher Isherwood but also Herman Göring is a descendant.

This shows that, especially when starting so far back in time, the cousinship of men is incredible. What is missing for me is a greater knowledge of the Muslim world, Africa, Asia and so on. Hopefully one day we will know more.
Hope this is of some interest.

Dear Leo,

A most interesting post. The Orseolo (and Candiano) families
are two fine ornaments anyone would enjoy find hanging on the
family tree. But, a question first:

Paul Theroff shows the following:

" 3.Adalbert, Mgve of the Ostmark, d.1053;
m.1st Adelheid N;
m.2d Frowila, dau.of Peitro Orseolo, Doge of Venice;
both kids were by 1st m. " [1]

I know Msr. Theroff relies largely on ES, but am unsure which
version (Adelheid or Frowila) is correct.

Grazie mille,

John

Dear John,

This is a good example of how, by exposing information, errors can be found.
The link you query I had found in Turton's page 110. Both Isenburg/Freytag
von Loringhoven and ES make the first wife the mother of both. This means
that my message still stands as far as the links between so many people,
except they do not go back to Pietro Orseolo but only to
Adalbert------------what a pity.
Thanks for finding this error.
Leo
