Dear Newsgroup ~
In 1836 Thomas Stapleton published abstracts from the wardrobe
accounts of King Edward II of England in an interesing article
published in Archaeologia, 21 (1836): 318-345. I had the good fortune
of viewing Mr. Stapleton's article this past week at the University of
Texas in Austin while attending the national FGS Conference in that
city.
Mr. Stapleton includes the following information regarding Lady
Elizabeth de Clinton and her husband, Sir Eble de Mounts, on page 340:
"To Mr. John Pecok, junior, sent by the King's special order with the
Lady Elizabeth de Clinton, wife of Sir Eubulo de Montibus, from
Nottingham to Makestok in Arden, to defray her expenses and those of
her suite, 3rd of August, 11th Edw. II [1317], 2l. 10s. To Friar
Walter de Assherugge, sent by the King on the 15th of February, 11
Edw. II. [1317/8] from the park of Windsor to the priory of
Bermondsey, for the honourable interment there of the body of Sir
Eubulo de Montibus, deceased, for money by him expended therein, 3l.
6s. 8d." END OF QUOTE.
Inasmuch as Maxstoke, Warwickshire is mentioned in connection with
Lady Elizabeth de Clinton, it seems likely that Elizabeth is a
daughter of John de Clinton, 1st Lord Clinton, died 1310/1, by his
wife, Ida de Oddingseles, and thus a descendant of King Henry II of
England. This placement would make Elizabeth the sister of John de
Clinton, Knt., 2nd Lord Clinton (died 1335), and of William de
Clinton, Knt., Earl of Huntingdon (died 1354).
So far, in a cursory search, I've been unable to locate any other
contemporary reference to Sir Eble de Mounts or his wife, Elizabeth de
Clinton. The following item which may or may not refer to this Eble
de Mounts was found in the helpful online National Archives catalogue
at http:// http://www.catalogue.nationalarchives.gov.uk/search.asp:
C 143/51/3: William Opkeliok to grant the manor of Westeropkeliok to
Ebulo de Montibus. Scotland (Peebles). Date: 33 EDWARD I [1304-1305].
If anyone has additional particulars regarding Sir Eble de Mounts or
his wife, Elizabeth de Clinton, I would appreciate hearing from them.
Sincerely, Douglas Richardson

Dear Doug,
Saw your post before closing up this p.m., and yes, there
is more information available having to do with Ebles/Ebulo
'de Montibus'. From my notes:
Ebles de Montibus, of Ketton, co. Rutland, came to England
as a vassal of Peter of Savoy (identified as a Savoyard
knight) following Eleanor of Provence's coming to England to
marry Henry III. He was made constable of Windsor Castle, and
was a royal steward, 1262-3. CP shows him marrying Joan de
Somery (widow of a Somery). Sources: CP XII:352 (pedigree of
Strange, Lord Strange), note 1. Also Henry Sutliff posted to
SGM some time ago, in which he cited CP XIV:596 as to a
correction or corrections - see <Aylesbury + LeStrange>,
posted in 1999. Miss Howell's biography of Eleanor of
Provence also has something to say re: Ebles, but little
added fact as I recall.
As far as I know, CP shows only Joan as Ebles' wife, and
(supposedly) mother of Alianore, wife of John le Strange of
Knockin (d. ca. Aug 1309). She was the ancestress of the
subsequent Lords Strange of Knockin. It is possible you have
found not only a correction as to the maternity of Alianore de
Montibus, but also some interesting new ancestry.
If I find more details re: Alianore de Montibus (incl.
birth related info) I will pass it on; hopefully someone else
may have something to hand before that.
Good find!

Dear Doug (et al.),
Looking at this again in the light of day, an interesting problem exists
between my (earlier) view of this Eubolo de Montibus who d. before 15 Feb
1317/1318, and the individual Ebles/Eubolo de Montibus who came to England from
Savoy - the latter individual having fl. in the 1260's, and recorded as d. in
1268. This is clearly not the same individual.
Perhaps Eubolo, husband of Elizabeth de Clinton, was a son (illegitimate
?) of the earlier Ebles? Will see if I can find other evidence of these
individuals.
Cheers (and apologies for the earlier confusion),
John

Dear John
A cursory search on this individual would include 'The Knight's of Edward
I', which is an obvious place to start for this period. I'd also recommend
'The Household Book of Queen Isabella of England', which gives details, and
consulting Margaret Howell's study "Eleanor of Provence".
Both Ebles held the posts as stewards in the royal household (Eble I steward
to Henry III, Eble II steward to queen Isabella, drawing an annual fee of
£20) which is possibly how Ida de Clinton (as lady of the queen's chamber)
and her sons, John and William (as squires of the queen's household), figure
in queen Isabella's household accounts in 1311/1312. Assuming Elizabeth
Clinton is the daughter of Ida, her parents having married post 1282,
Eleanor de Montibus could not have been her daughter, having married 13 Oct
1275-1 June 1276 (CP XIV Lestrange). Eleanor was daughter of Joan, widow of
Godfrey Craucombe and Stephen de Somery.
