The Emo family was originated Greece. From there they moved to
Dalmatia, arriving finally to Venice in 997. They were annexed to the
Maggior Consiglio and counted among the patrician families.
Since 1301 the Emos lived in the parish of S. Leonardo, where they
built a palace in front of Canal Grande.
In the Giudecca in 1537 we find a certain Lunardo Emo, who had
properties in S. Leonardo, and in S. Eufemia della Giudecca.
Pietro Emo, who was a gifted writer, was named in 1628 bishop of
Crema.
Admiral Angelo Emo was, perhaps, the most important character of the
family. According to Berlan, with him Venice seemed to be seing a
resurrection of its splendour, the times of Dandolo, Zeno and
Morosini. "He died in 1792, and in 1797 Venice had to fall!" The corps
of Emo brought to Venice from Malta, where he had died, was buried in
the church of "i Servi" in marmor sculpted by Ferrari Torretti. After
the church was suppressed, his rests were transported to the church of
S. Martino, and from there to the one of S. Biagio. For his value, the
Republic charged Antonio Canova with a "cenotafio" in a hall of the
"Arsenale".
