FLEMING AND FITZ SWAIN FAMILIES OF CUMBERLAND, WESTMORLAND,

Legg inn av David Hepworth » 09 sep 2004 13:07:17

I am trying to piece together an expanded early history of the Fleming
family who originated in the records in Cumberland and Westmorland in
the 12th century.

Hunter offers much information, and Farrer has many records in EYC 3
and 8, but I am hoping to find further strands - or verification.

Of particular interest is their ongoing tenancy and sub-tenancy
relationships with Ailric, his son Swein and his sons Adam and Henry.
There seems to be little information about Henry (what little I have,
other than landholdings, I will post later) and one suggestion was
that his caput became Castle Sowerby (which was certainly retained)
and he changed his name to Sowerby.

There also seem to be inferences that there was a Thomas, Robert and
Richard who may have been brothers of Adam and Henry.

I recall reading somewhere that Swein married into either Gospatrick
or Orm's family, but this doesn't appear in any reliable sources.

The historical relationships between these families seems to continue
which tends to indicate a closer bond than tenurial holdings.

I wonder if anyone in the Group could help steer me please, as my
background is historical rather than genealogical?

Thanks, David

You have probably already done this; but, if not, check thoroughly through
the Transactions of the Cumberland & Westmorland Antiquarian &
Archaeological Society, both Old and New Series.

Have you looked at A2A recently? A lot of Cumberland family archives were
added in June and July.

One of the experts on Cumberland family history was the late C. Roy
Hudleston. His papers are now at Durham University.

I suppose Cumberland's most eminent scholar now is Angus J. L. Winchester.
You might do well to contact him (he used to be at Lancaster University -
not sure if he still is).
