According to the old chronicles the Donato or Donà family had a common
origin. From old they divided in two lines, which from different
places moved to Venice at different stages. There were two main
branches "dalle Tresse" and "dalle Rose", because of their different
arms.
This family produced three "dogi": Francesco in 1545, Leonardo in
1606, and Nicolò in 1618.
Lodovico was created cardinal in 1378 by Urban VI
Andrea Donà was accused of receiving money from the duke of Milan and
so he was put in jail in 1447. Thanks to Emperor Frederick III, he was
released some time later.
Giuseppe was accused of espionage for the Spaniards, and so he was
executed in 1601.
Antonio was accused of "de peculatu" and, after dissapearing in 1619,
was excluded from all the Venetian dominions.
Paolo was accused of seducing a nun in 1704 by Pietro Minotto, but
after being exiled for a while he was pardoned.
According to some chronicles, the Donàs built the church of S. Fosca.
Together with other patrician families they took part in the
restauration of the church of S. Giustina.
Next to the Ponte Donà, the Donà dalle Rose family possessed a palace,
which doge Leonardo Donà placed the first stone in 1610. This palace
was designed by Paolo Sarpi.
In this palace doge Leonardo and his brother Nicolò often had terrible
quarrels between each other. In one of these, the "doge" died of
apoplesia in 1612. Nicolò and his cousins divided the palace in two.
