In support of the idea that Mary Luttrell, wife of Adam Winthrop,
hailed from Bristol, England, I've noticed the following extracted
record in the I.G.I.:

St. Michael's, Bristol

Mary, daughter of Addam and Mary Winthrop, baptized 29 Nov. 1678

A very sophisticated portrait of Mary Luttrell Winthrop is owned by
the Massachusetts Historical Society. To my (admittedly inexpert)
eye, it looks like a Van Dyck or Lely (or, at least, "school of")--a
far cry from the naive and sober daubings of most contemporary
portraits at the Society. See Oliver, Huff, and Hanson, eds.,
_Portraits in the Massachusetts Historical Society: An Illustrated
Catalog with Descriptive Matter_ (Boston: the Society, 1988). The
portrait is also reproduced, somewhat less pleasingly, in Mary
Caroline Crawford, _Famous Families of Massachusetts_ (Little, Brown,
1930).
