Medieval ancestry of Senator John Edwards
Senator John Edwards, candidate for Vice President, seems to have a more
thoroughly commoner ancestry than we are generally accustomed to in our
national candidates. Nevertheless, I believe one line of his ancestry,
which is shared with my own, can be traced to medieval times, and even
royalty.
There are two connections in the line I give below which are not
absolutely proven, and I will explain each. I number the generations and I
list my sources at the end.
LINEAGE:
1. John Edwards (b. 1953) [Reit]
2. Catharine "Bobbie" Wade (b. 26 Sept. 1933) [Reit]
3. Hershel Thomas Wade (b. S.C., 10 May 1908) [Reit]
4 Katie Sams (b. N.C., ca. 1890) [Reit]
5. Columbus C ... [or C ... Columbus - probably "Christopher Columbus"]
Sams (b. N.C., ca. 1848) [Reit]
6. Larkin Sams (b. N.C., 1815) [Reit]
7. Agnes Blackwell (b. Va., 1778) [Reit]
8. Elizabeth Price (b. Henrico Co., Va., ca. 1754, d. Spartanburg, S. C.,
before 1837) [Reit] (I am descended from Elizabeth's brother William.)
9. John Price (will probated Halifax Co., Va., 1772) [Price] (In his will
John lists his daughter "Elizabeth Blackwell")
10. John Price (b. Henrico Co., Va., early 1690s, d. Goochland Co., Va.,
before 1751) [Price] (There is no direct conclusive evidence that #9 was
the son of #10, however significant circumstantial evidence leads to this
conclusion. See the reference for discussion.)
11. John Price (b. Henrico Co., Va., 1650s or 1660s, d. Henrico Co., Va.,
1711) [Price]
12. John Price (b. Henrico Co., Va., 1627/8, d. before 1662) [Price]
13. John Price (b. Great Britain, 1583-4, d. Charles City, Va., about
1628-30) [Price] (This John Price came to Jamestown, America in 1611. He
served in the House of Burgesses, and was a signatory of a letter to the
King.)
14. Richard Price (of Manavon, Montgomeryshire, Wales, gentleman, tanner)
(The evidence for this identification is provided in [Price], but this
explanation is my own. Since #13 could sign his name, it is reasonable to
conclude he had attended school. A John Price enrolled at Shrewsbury
school in 1600, which would indicate birth about 1584. A John Price is
described in an indenture of 1610-1 as son and heir of Richard Pryce of
Manovan, which is just before the arrival in America of #13. It is clamed
that the signatures match. This indenture was witnessed by Richard's
brother Thomas. There have been several claims concerning the ancestry of
#13 in print and on the internet, all making him a member either of the
Price family of Newtown, or the Price family of Glan Meheli, which two
families are related. Since #13 served in the House of Burgesses, it is
reasonable to expect to find him in the minor gentry. Since his name is
Welsh, I searched [Dwnn] for possibly relevant Price families, especially
in Manavon and throughout Montgomeryshire. The only fit is the family of
Glan Meheli, which has brothers Richard and Thomas of the right age. (The
Visitation does not give their children, since they were younger brothers
of the principal family heir.) Furthermore, John, another brother of
Richard and Thomas, had also attended Shrewsbury School. I can disprove
all possible placements of #13 in the Newtown family, and the only
remaining claim, other than mine, is that #13 was the son of Thomas,
brother of Richard, for which I have found no substantiation. Much more
extensive ancestry of #14 can be easily developed. The line presented
below is only an example.)
15. Elizabeth Herbert [Dwnn]
16. Richard Herbert [Dwnn]
17. Margaret ferch Thomas [Dwnn]
18. Elsbeth Griffith (From here on I believe the relationships are
generally established. If anyone has specific questions, I'd be happy to
answer.)
19. John Griffith
20. Thomas Griffith
21. Rhys Griffith
22. Joan Somerville
23. Philip de Somerville
24. Isabel Merlay
25. Roger Merlay III
26. Roger Merlay II
27. Roger de Merlay
28. Juliana of Dunbar
29. Gospatrick, earl of Dunbar
30. Gospatrick I, earl of Northumberland
31. Maldred, lord of Carlisle & Allerdale
32. Bethoc
33. Malcolm II, king of Scotland

Have you thought of selling this information to the Bush campaign? He's
not as common as he pretends?

What an idea! If he sells the idea to the Republicans, we might all
