Montgomerie-Boyd mix-up?

Legg inn av Leo van de Pas » 25 aug 2004 11:44:45

It was pointed out to me that I could have a very wrong relationship in my data base. However, I looked into the Scots Peerage and there it seems implied that it possibly could be correct.

Margaret Boyd, 2nd daughter of Thomas Boyd, of Kilmarnock, was she married to her grandmother's brother, Alexander Montgomerie, 1st Baron Montgomerie?

By the Boyd family it is recorded that Sir Thomas Boyd, of Kilmarnock, married Joan Montgomerie, but no parents are given to her. Their son, also Thomas, is father of Margaret Boyd who married Alexander Montgomerie, 1st Baron Montgomerie.

By the Montgomerie family we are told that Sir John Montgomerie and his (first) wife Agnes of the Isles are the parents of the said Sir Alexander, of Robert and of Agnes. Then as an after thought is mentioned:
Two other daughters are assigned to Sir John in the'Memorials' , Joanna, said to be married to Sir Thomas Boyd, of Kilmarnock, and Isabella, said to be married to Archibald Muir of Rowallan, but the evidence to their relationship is not wholly conclusive.

Does anyone know what the proper relationships are?
Many thanks,

Dear Leo,

The record as to this Boyd-Montgomery marriage is, I think,
inadequate to consider the link proven. This especially since the
basis is the 'Memorials' cited in SP, and the traditional CP/SP
caveat wherein Joanna Montgomerie is 'said to be married to Sir
Thomas Boyd...'

The 'Memorials' themselves have other known errors included
in the assignments of daughters to the Montgomery family. One
case in point, the 'Memorials' give Alexander Montgomerie, Master
of Montgomerie and his wife Catherine Kennedy a daughter,

' Helen, said to have been married to Sir James Bruce
of Airth ' [SP III:433, cites Memorial i.27]

The parentage in this case is correct, but the daughter's
name was Euphemia Montgomerie, and her husband Sir Robert Bruce of
Airth [1].

Given the reliability issue with the 'Memorials' themselves,
the terminology given in SP as what Joanna Montgomerie's parentage
is 'said to be', and the consanguinity issue the assignment
appears to pose (1st and 3rd degrees), I would theorize that
Joanna Montgomerie was 'at best' the sister (not the daughter) of
Sir John Montgomerie of Eaglesham and Ardrossan (d. ca. 1428).

~ There is still a consanguinity issue here, as this would
place the relationship of Alexander Montgomerie (d. aft 7
Oct 1469) and Margaret Boyd in the 2nd and 3rd degrees.
The chronology should be examined; however, the
consanguinity in this case would be the same as with the
marriage of James Douglas, Earl of Morton (d. 1493) and
the Lady Joan, daughter of James I, King of Scots.

Unless someone of the list has found proof, or at least
evidence for a more likely solution to this issue, I would
suggest such a 'placement' for Joanna Montgomerie - which (as
'Joan' Montgomerie) you already show on Genealogics.

Cheers,

John
