RPA note - Berkeley

Legg inn av John Higgins » 22 aug 2004 20:30:46

The newly published Plantagenet Ancestry has a pretty complete account of
the early members of the Berkeley family, who acquired a Plantagenet descent
relatively quickly when Sir Maurice de Berkeley, father of the 1st Lord
Berkeley, married a daughter of an illegitimate son of King John. But RPA
doesn't show a linkage to the Berkeleys of Wymondham. I had understood from
other pedigrees (peerages and otherwise) that the Berkeleys of Wymondham
descended from Thomas, a younger son of Thomas, 1st Lord Berkeley. This
apparently is also indicated in Smyth's "Lives of the Berkeleys", at least
as reflected on Tim Powys-Lybbe's website. RPA does list three other sons
of the 1st Lord, but omits Thomas. Is this simply an omission or oversight
in RPA, or is there new information on the Berkeleys of Wymondham?
