Dear Chris, Rosie, Doug, Paul, Brom, Leo, Ian, et al.,

One of the better-known GAUDs [Gateway Ancestors of Unknown Descent]
in U.S. Colonial genealogy is Cecily/Cicely _____ (Jordan) Farrar, whose
descendants can claim membership in the Order of Descendants of Ancient
Planters, but little else. Various claims and theories have been
advanced (the Phippen story comes to mind), but are unproved at best.

There are some facts which I noted the other day which, while also
not providing a proven connection, do provide some direction for
research as to a solution to this problem.

1. Thomas West, 3rd Lord de la Warr, arrived in Jamestown, Virginia
in June 1610, rescuing the colony from probable abandonment.
3 additional vessels arrived from England soon thereafter.
In August 1610, the Swan arrived: among the passengers was
the young Cecily (surname unknown to date).

2. Thomas West returned to Virginia in 1618, aboard the Neptune -
or at least that was his intent (he died en route, possibly
in Nova Scotia, in June). The Neptune arrived in Virginia
in August 1618 with its surviving passengers, including
William Farrar, a younger son of John Farrar, Esq. of
Croxton, Lincolnshire.

3. Thomas West's wife Cecily (nee Shirley) had several sisters,
including Mary, who was married to Sir John Crofte or Crofts
by whom she had 7 daughters, including 4 with known spouses
as of February 1621/2, and 3 without. Amongst those who were
not known to be married in February 1621/2 was the young
Cicely Crofts [1].

4. The names of the children of Mary (Shirley) Crofts, daughter
of Sir Thomas Shirley and Anne Kempe, appear in chronological
order in the will of Anne (Kempe) Shirley, as given below.
There is no solid birthdate for Cicely Crofts in the IGI record,
but the next older sister, Mary Crofts, appears in the IGI
(under the spelling Maria Crafts) as born in Saxham, Suffolk
on 9 Oct 1597 [2]. Cicely Crofts, the next child, was likely
born say 1598-1600.

~Cecily, widow of Samuel Jordan, and subsequently wife of
William Farrar, was evidently born ca. 1599 : she is
recorded as being 24 years of age at the Muster of Virginia,
dated 21 Jan 1623/24 [3].

The association of William Farrar the emigrant with Thomas West was
due at least in part to his being a subscriber to the Third Charter of
the Virginia Company. He married the widowed Cecily (____) Jordan after
3 Jan 1624/5, and no later than 1626; soon thereafter we find him
associated with Francis West, younger brother of the deceased Thomas
West, as a member of the King's Council for Virginia (Farrar's appoint-
ment dated 4 March 1625/6). West's position on the Council was for
obvious reasons; George Sandys, Treasurer of the Virginia Company and
son of the later Archbishop Sandys of York, likewise [4].

Farrar may have been placed on the Council in part due to an
enhancement of his social position, in marrying a near relation of the
Lords de la Warr (and, if correctly identified, a sister-in-law of
Thomas Wentworth, 4th Baron Wentworth and future Earl of Cleveland).
See the following chart [NOTE conjectured identification of Cicely
Crofts as being identical with Cecily, wife of Samuel Jordan and
William Farrar].

I have capitalized in the above chart those names in the
Jordan/Farrar family that provide limited onomastic support to this
theory [namesakes for Mary Jordan and John and Cecily Farrar being
found in their mother and *theorised* maternal grandfather and
grandmother].

Aside from the social and onomastic evidence given above, the
chronology certainly is supportive. As we known when Cecily, wife
of William Farrar, was born within a year's time, and have a good
range as to when Cecily/Cicely Crofts was likely born, it is
compelling to note that the timeframe is contemporaneous. We appear
therefore to have a Cecily for whom an approximate birthdate and
English parentage are known, and a Cecily for whom an approximate
birthdate and subsequent Colonial career are known. This may
in fact be a single individual, and not truly a Conundrum of the Two
Cecilies.

This is obviously conjectural only, but is put forth as a strong
possibility. If anyone of the list has any relevant documentation or
suggestions (esp. as to solid evidence concerning the fate of
Cicely/Cecily Crofts), these would be greatly appreciated.

Cheers,

John *
