Dear Rosie, Chris, Doug, Leo, Ian, Ivor, et al.,

In a prior post to SGM, extracts from the PRO site were noted as
identifying Juliana (fl. 1267), wife of William le Constable of
Flamborough as Juliana de Dayvill, or De Eyville. At that time, I
further identified Juliana as a previously unknown daughter of Robert
de Daiville of Egmanton, co. Notts. (d. bef 2 Apr 1201) and his wife
Juliana de Montfort, daughter of Thurstan de Montfort of Beaudesert,
co. Warwicks[1].

Rosie Bevan has kindly provided details from EYC XII, including the
following text which serves to prove a relationship with the de Daiville
or D'eiville family of Egmanton. Concerning the subject William le
Constable,

' His wife's name was Juliana, who as noted below, survived
him and was living in 1267; and besides his eldest son Robert
he had a younger son John, rector of Egmanton, co. Nottingham,
who witnessed Robert's confirmation of their father's gift to
Bridlington priory <8>; and another son Henry, who held land
in Seweby <9>. '

' [EYC Notes]
<8> Bridlington Chartulary, p. 152. The date was presumably
earlier than 1244, when Richard de Syrebur[n]e was instituted
to Egmanton, for the latter was apparently still rector in
1270, although another presentation wa made in the previous
year (Reg. Gray, pp. 93-04; Reg. Giffard, pp. 91, 247).
<9> Yorks. Deeds, iv, no. 452. For the possibility that he
had other sons Sir Richard and Theobald see below. ' [2]

While there is certainly nothing about the institution of a rector
in 13th century England that proves a familial relationship, the know-
ledge that Juliana was a Daiville, and that the manor of Egmanton, co.
Notts. was the caput of the Daiville barony, makes this identification
certain. It is evident that John le Constable was presented as rector of
the church of Egmanton either by his uncle and namesake John de Daiville
(d. after 1228), or by his cousin and John's son and heir, Robert de
Daiville (d. between 1242-1260).

It is a possibility, given certain unknowns in the chronology of the
Constable and Daiville families, that Juliana was actually a daughter
(and not sister) of John de Daiville: pending any supporting evidence for
such a later placement, Juliana was most likely as a daughter of Robert
de Daiville and Juliana de Montfort, as previously identified.

Cheers,

John *
