HELP INFORMATION REQUESTED: mail me at: affaytadi [at] yahoo.com

I' m researching the history of the AFFAITATI family (if I can collect
material, I intent to write an article or a book on the subject).
I' m only in a very early stage of researching this family, so help,
information or just general hints are appreciated.
Here's what I have found out until now:
- Although one source mentions Florence, the family seems to originate from
the city of Cremona (Lombardy),where a Palazzo Affaitati still exists.
They were important bankers and merchants, and had agents in London,
Madeira, Constantinopel, etc), and played an important role in financing
voyages to the Americas.
- Towards the end of the 15th century , the family relocated to Lisbon
(Portugal), where they got a monopoly on the import of sugar from Madeira
and gained a fortune. AFFAITATI ( the first known according to what I know
at the moment) had two sons: Thomas (=Tommaso) and Giovanni Fransesco (=
Joao Franscisco) .Thomas founded a branch of the banking and trading company
in Antwerp (Flanders) in the early 16th century. Giovanni Fransesco remained
in Portugal, and founded a Portoguese branch (he was married to at least two
new-christian women, but I don't know their names), who changed the name
into Lafetá (a name that apparently continues to exist in Brazil and
Portugal, although I have not found anybody in the phonebooks of said
countries.)
- Thomas was married to a certain Lucrezia PERSICA ( or PARSPICA: both
names seem mispelled/wrong, anybody know the answer?). They had a son named
Giovanni Carlos (=Jehan Carlos, Jean Charles), who married Lucretia
AFFAITATI ( born in Portugal) her mother was apparently a VISCONTI;
however, I suspect this to be wrong. I believe she is a daughter of Giovanni
Francesco, and a (Portuguese) woman ???). This Giovanni Carlos was the last
to be involved in banking and trading, and had expanded the company
substantially in Antwerp, and bought the domain of Gistel (Ghistelles). His
offspring married into important (Flemish) families like ( PRANT, HANXELER,
ARKEL, MONTMORENCY, DE LA COSTE, CAMARGO, HAIJE, THIENNES, for example).
-In the 19th century, the male lineage of Flemish branch (d'Affaytadi de
Ghistelles) died out.
-The name comes in a variety of spellings:
-Italy : AFFAITATI, ALFAIATI, AFFAIATI, AFFAITADI (in Italy, members named
AFFAITATI are still to be found in Cremona (at one point they wer counts of
GRUMELLO), and Naples).
-Portugal: LAFETA, LAFEITAR, LAFETAT (in the16th century ,the family owned
the mansion of "Quinta dos Loridos" ,and a medieval tower now named: "Torre
dos Lafetas"; both near Bombarral)
- Flanders:AFFAITADI,AFFAITATI, AFFAYTADI DE GHISTELLES
-I have found two books dealing with this family. Both were written by
Professor Jean Denuce, who wrote rather interesting books on Flanders and
mercantilism:
-Italiaansche koopmansgeslachten te Antwerpen in de XVIe - XVIIIE eeuwen .
A publication that also includes other Italian families in Flanders. Not
much genealogical details.
-Inventaire des Affaitadi Banquiers Italiens en Anvers de l'année 1568 . A
book I have yet to receive.Apparently ,it does not include genealogical
information either.
From what I have read, Denuce did not consult Italian or Portuguese sources.
His book is strong on the Flemish branch, not the other branches.
Sorry, for not including dates (I don't hardly any).

I will keep you updated.

Greetings

There was a well-known branch in Portugal. They were
very wealthy, and married into side branches of the
Portuguese royals. I recall Cosme Lafetá (Cosimo
Affaitati).

As far as I can tell the name faded away. Anyway I'm
forwarding your msg to the Portuguese list.

Barbara,

Someone posted a query about the Lafetá/Affaitadi a
few months ago. I believe I've answered it. You can
look for me at orkut; there is a community Familia
Doria where I am.
