According to some, the Duodo family came to Venice from Morea
(Greece). Others say it was from Germany.
The Duodos lived in the parish of Santa Maria Zobenigo from the early
days of their stay in Venice.
A certain Leonardo Duodo da Santa Maria Zobenigo was in the Council
from 1265 to 1302.
The heirs of Simeone Duodo and Pietro Duodo da S. Maria Zobenigo mad
an important contribution to the Venetian State in 1379.
A certain Pietro was captain in 1483 of the "Armata" at the lake of
Garda, and in 1495 he led an scuad of Albanian knights at the battle
of Taro.
A certain Francesco took part in 1571 of the glorious battle of
Lepanto.
Another Pietro, son of this Francesco, was a learned man, and carried
out many embassies for the Republic. Returning from Poland in 1588, he
hired the famous architect Scamozzi to rebuild the family palace at S.
Maria Zobenigo. Pietro was also responsible of the church of
Monselice, similar to the Roman basilicas. He died in 1611.
Sanudo in his "Diarii" refers to the palace of S. Maria Zobenigo
during a banquet on the 20th February 1532 presided by "Pietro Duodo
q. Francesco".
According to Gallicciolli this palace suffered badly from the great
fire of the 3rd December 1741.
Later on, this palace passed to the Barbarigos.
