Relewants to Lars J. Værkland in USA
I `ve been traying to find relevants after my father`s uncle, who emigreat to USA - propably Muskegon, Michigan in year 1882. I found information that he left Trondheim 20.april -82 with s/s "Tasso" to Hull. From Glaskow with s/s "Cicassian" and arrived New York 9.may -82 (10.may?)
My father`s uncle`s name in Norway was Lars Jensen Værkland. He was born in Lade, Strinda 17.oktober 1864, and was baptised 6.november 1864. If my information is correct, he got married in the US and got two children named Bertha and Jan?
I would be verry interested in hearing from somebody that can give me information regarding Lars J. Værkland and his closest family in USA. I sincerly look forward to hearing from some

Hei Gunnar!
I did a little searching in the 1900, 1910, 1920 censuses for your relative, Lars...and I can not find anyone with the name close to Værkland. I searched for all Norwegians living in the county of Muskegon...nothing seemed to come close. I even thought of looking for Norwegians with the first name, Lars, Lewis or Louis....and I wondered if Lars' father was Jens because you mentioned the middle name Jensen (so I also looked for the last name Jensen too)...
Do you have any more ideas or do you know when the family might have lived in Muskegon?
mvh Patty

Re: Relewants to Lars J. Værkland in USA
Hi Patty!
Thank you so much for your answer!
I have got som further informasjon regarding Lars J. Værkland. His parents names were Jens and Martha. The ticket for Lars`s journey to the US, was paid by someone already living in the US. Possibly his uncle Eskild Bostadtrø (Bostad?) who lived in Muskegon, Michigan.
My late aunt told me that Lars died a young man, possibly in an accident. His widow wrote a few letters to my grandmother, but the contact soon creased. That is pretty musch all I know about him.
Best regards Gunnar

Re: Relewants to Lars J. Værkland in USA
Hi again Patty!
I`ve received a tip from mr. Lester Hanson. In the passenger list for s/s Circassia (arrived 11th of may 1882), he found an entry for Lars J. Varklandal, age 18. Some overlapping writing covers his last name, which make it hard to read. He found the name on page 2, last norwegian closest to the bottom of the page. I sincerly hope this could be a valuable lead.
Best regards Gunnar.

Hei igjen Gunnar!
I tried different variations on the last name "Varklandal". Varkland, in the 1900 census...even searched "all states" (not just Michigan).
Perhaps someone else in this forum could offer some other possibilities for searching?
He might have chosen something totally different for a last name...that would make searches very difficult...Plus the other "problem" is searching for someone who arrived in 1882...but looking for him 18 years later (the 1900 census). Too bad the 1890 census is lost (almost all burned in a fire)...

Re: Relewants to Lars J. Værkland in USA
Hi Gunnar!
I still have not made any more progress looking for Lars. But, wondering if he might have gone to Muskegon to work in the lumbering industry. Muskegon was a "center" for this kind of work in the 1880s.
Perhaps you might find this site interesting...

Re: Relewants to Lars J. Værkland in USA
Can you tell me any more about the "Bostad" family? ...years of birth etc...
There was a family with the last name "Bruster"...in 1880, Hans age 50 with wife (Anna) and 4 children (all born in Norway).
One of these children, Daniel (born May 1854) uses "Brustad" in the 1900 Muskegon census...
Perhaps this is not the Bostad family you mentioned...but it was as close as I could find in spelling...

Re: Relewants to Lars J. Værkland in USA
I can only search up to the 1920 census with Heritage Quest from my home.
But I was at the library today so I used their Ancestry program. In the 1930 Muskegon census I found an Anna Bostad, a widow, age 76. Living with her are 4 grown children...but they have the last name Johnson...Bertha age 51, Adoph age 46, John age 42 and Melvin age 39.
Then I looked in the 1920 Muskegon census and found Ole Johnson age 75 and the same Anna (now Johnson)...with 5 adult children...all have the last name Johnson...Bertha was born in Norway...the rest of the "children" were born in Michigan. The immigration year is hard to read...but it looks like the 1870s for Ole and Anna (perhaps 1876).
I tried to find the family in earlier census years but did not have any luck.
Do you think this family is any relation to the Bostad family you mentioned?

Re: Relewants to Lars J. Værkland in USA
Hi again Patty!
I think it very likely that due to his background growing up on a farm, that Lars found work in the timber industry.
Regarding Eskild Bostad, he was born in Norway. He emigrated to the US in 1880 with his wife Martha. They returned to Norway in 1884. They didn`t have children.
Lars had two uncles, Ole Jensen Bostad and Oluf Jensen Bostad. They emigrate to Michigan in 1887. Oluf returned to Norway in 1889.
With it comes to Anna Bostad, there is a woman with the same name coming from Malvik, who in 1881 at the age of 26 year emigrated to Grove City, Michigan. She is most propably not related to Lars.
If Lars died early, it`s likely that his widow remarried. From that I have heard, that got only two children together.
I just want to let you know that I`m very grateful for effort and your help! It`s very kind of you to do so much to help me.
Best regards Gunnar

Hei igjen Gunnar!
You are welcome...vær så god!!
I'm sorry I could not find anything more about your Lars...
I will keep it in mind the next time I am at the library, using Ancestry.
I also took a look in Ancestry for the state census for Michigan...this is different than the Federal census, which is more often used for family searches. Nothing seemed to "fit" your family in the state census.
mvh Patty
