Herbert fitz Herbert, the eldest son of Herbert fitz Herbert and Sibyl
Corbet, married Lucy of Hereford. A second marriage is mentioned in
the article "Family of Herbert", by Joseph Morris, Archaeologia
Cambrensis, 13(1858), pp. 16-30.
In this article, available online at

http://books.google.com/books?id=P741AA ... 22#PPA1,M1

Herbert's second wife was Maud Chandos, who later married Philip de
Columbers.

By his first wife, Herbert was the father of Piers fitz Herbert, and
Reginald Fitz Herbert. Piers' descendants are well known; Reginald
was the Reginald fitz Herbert who paid the first installment of a fine
to receive the manors of Caleston and Stanton Fitzwarren in 1190.
Reginald was dead by 1192, when his father made further payments for
these manors.

According to Joseph Morris in his article, by Maud Chandos, Herbert
was also the father of Matthew fitz Herbert, the Magna Carta surety,
who also at one time was sheriff of Sussex (see Victoria County
History of Sussex, vol. 3, pp. 71-82). Halsted in his "History of
Kent" (vol. vii) mentions this Matthew, his son of the same name, and
a supposed descendant, Herbert fitz Herbert, who took the name of
Finch during the reign of Edward I.

A search of my files has not produced any other evidence of this fitz
Herbert-Chandos marriage. Is this marriage
"accepted" or is it a fiction to tie the Magna Carta Surety to the
other fitz Herberts?
