Off Topic - America versus Britain

In New york there was a posh party, only the richest of the rich were there. All dressed in their finest of finery. But then a Texan arrived, wearing cowboy boots and a gallon hat.

The hostess was aghast, and confronted him. You can't come here dressed like this!!!

The Texan: Yes I can!!

The hostess: Where did you get it that this is acceptable in a society like this?

The Texan : I got it from the highest authority in etiquette.

The Hostess ; Really? Tell me more.

See below

The Texan : I was in England and was invited to a reception in Buckingham Palace, and the Queen came to me and said, you may be able to arrive dressed like this in New York, but you can't do it here !!!

Pope Leo The Saint, are you sure you are real?
You have this lovely stereotype about America,
like the stereotype you have about Duncan I King of Scots
being a cardboard character out of a play call Macbeth?
And you have this lovely stereotype about New York's Harlem?
and you have this lovely stereotype about Texas?
so, now that you cannot answer aaron, <G> or Hines
you attack NY, Texas and praise HM the Queen?
HM the Queen would rather lock wineglasses with a Texan
than Pope Leo the Saint, any day

Grow up, visit America, cause we'll tell you where to park ur a$$

Ohdeargod - you're NOT an American, are you? I so hoped we were on
different continents. Incidentally, Leo is not in England. Nor is he
English.

And of course the story is probably American in itself. Unlike the NY
hostess, the Queen has excellent manners and would not have commented.
There is a well known quote (when the Queen and Mrs Thatcher turned up
at an event in the same outfit)

"The Queen never notices what anyone else is wearing."

It's also acceptable to wear ethnic costumes at Buck House receptions
so a Texan in cowboy boots and gallon hat would have been within that
rule. Given the equestrian interests of the family, had they been
really good boots he might even have been asked for the maker.

Cowboy boots and gallon hat *only* maybe not. :-)

In Texas ... where I am from ... at many very fancy gatherings,
one most certainly can. One DOES. Just price the boots and you can see why!
You will be aghast, even without diamonds and emeralds on them.
**I'm** aghast these days, and I paid $80 for a pair when I was in
high school in 1962 ... that's about a week's pay for a unionized
factory worker.

Actually it does not look strange. The suits are equally expensive
and properly fit around the boots. One would NOT arrive at a posh
party wearing fancy boots and .... horror of horrors .... a
suit not made for wearing boots.

Doug McDonald

Who was at a banquet last summer at the poshest of the posh, the
Petroleum Club in Ft. Worth. No boots, but cowboy hats. (Houston
is posher however).
