Peter Noyes & Shadrack Hapgood

Peter Noyes was the great-uncle of Shadrack Hapgood, both emigrants to New
England from Andover, Hampshire, England. (See Paul Reed's article in NEHGR
150:141 et seq.).

Shadrack's father, Thomas Hapgood was married twice. Thomas' first wife was
Mabel Smith, m. 7 Feb. 1630/1 at Andover. Thomas' second wife was Joan
Scullard. Joan had an older sister, Mary who m. John Smith, 21 May 1629,
also at Andover.

Peter Noyes was chr. at Andover, 30 Aug. 1590. His oldest child, Thomas, was
chr. at Weyhill, 17 Nov. 1623. Peter's wife, Elizabeth, was buried at
Weyhill, 13 Feb. 1635/6. Her surname is unknown. However, there is a
marriage record for Elisabetha Smith & Petrus Noyse on 18 Nov. 1622 at
Chieveley, Berkshire, England. This may be the marriage record for Peter
Noyes of Sudbury, Massachusetts. Chieveley and Weyhill are about twenty
miles apart.

Mary Scullard, who married John Smith was the niece (of the half-blood) to
Peter Noyes. It may be that there is some connection between Mabel, John &
Elizabeth Smith.

Peter Noyes' mother Dorothy was married twice: 1) Nicholas Blake and 2)
Thomas Noyes. Nicholas Blake was a distant cousin to Joanna Blake, who was
chr. at Andover, 16 Feb. 1612/3. Joanna Blake was married twice: 1) Robert
Sedgwick and 2) Rev. Thomas Allen. Part of the Sedgwick family settled in
Hartford, Connecticut.

Here is an extended kinship network based in Andover, England that sent
several emigrants to New England during the early colonial period.

I welcome any comments on the possible connections of the Smiths mentioned
above.

Heres what the marriage record at Chievely says:

"Petrus Noyse de Andov[er] et Elisabetha Smith de Oare" married 18
Nov. 1622.

There are a couple mentions of a Peter Noyes in the 1664-66 Berkshire
Visitation. Is this the same one who was in New England?

It is interesting to note the words "Prebend of Erchfont" in this
chart, as the father of James and Nicholas Noyes of New England had
been the minister at Urchfont/ Erchfont.

I don't find any Noyes pedigree in the published 1664/66 Visitation
above, but one must have been drawn up --

C. H. Josten, ed., _Elias Ashmole (1617-1692): His Autobiographical
and Historical Notes, His Correspondence, etc._, 5 vols. (Oxford:
Clarendon, 1966), 3: 1020-22:

[23 Mar. 1664/5]

Sitting 'at the Signe of the Mairemaid' in Newbury, Berkshire, Ashmole
recorded the arms and descents of the families of:

....

Peter Noyes of Trunkwood in the parish of Shinfield, Berks. (undated)
(ibid. [i.e., MS. Ashm. 851], p. 193).

So if anybody cares to consult the Ashmolean manuscripts, wherever
they may be ...
