I've just learned that the lead article in the January _Register_ will
be "Identification of the Unnamed Daughter of John1 and Elizabeth
(Thomson) Cogswell Who Remained in England," by Priscilla Colstad
Greenlees. I believe this was the "sister" mentioned by my ancestor
John2 Cogswell in his letter from England to his parents. Should be
good ...

Re: Cogswell article in forthcoming NEHGR
I got just the barest peek at the article on my lunch break, but it
appears the daughter left behind was Phyllis Cogswell, wife of John
Broadhurst. She was named for her grandmother, Phyllis (? White),
first wife of Rev. William Thompson of Westbury, co. Wilts.
The 1671 will of the Rev. John White of Chirton/ Churton/ Cheriton,
Wilts., mentions his nephew and niece John and Phyllis Broadhurst.
The will of Rev. William Thompson from the 1620s had mentioned his
brother-in-law, John White. The present note states there will be a
further article on this connection, but that it appears Phyllis, wife
of William Thompson, was a sister or half-sister of the Rev. John
White.
Rev. John White is apparently this person (the one at St. Albans Hall
in 1600) ...

Re: Cogswell article in forthcoming NEHGR
Also note that Dr. Samuel Thomson, M.D., of Taunton, Somerset, wrote
of riding "to Chewton [sic] to confer with my uncle [John] White ..."
http://books.google.com/books?id=DE87EH ... lr=&pgis=1
Although Samuel was probably a son of Rev. William Thompson's second
wife Elizabeth, it's understandable that he would have spoken of John
White of Cheriton as his "uncle."

RE: Cogswell article in forthcoming NEHGR also ADLAM, LAMBE
I wonder if the article makes mention of the COGSWELL forebear, Robert
COGSWELL (1510-1581) whose wife Alice (ca. 1518-1603) was a sister of Edith
(d. 1577), wife of John LAMBE (d.v.p. ca 1546), gent., of the manor of
[East] Coulston, Wilts., via their shared parents, John ADLAM, clothier of
Westbury, Wilts. (d. 1545) and his wife Marjorie NN?
Alice ADLAM and Robert COGSWELL's son Edward COGSWELL married Alice NN, and
had numerous children, of whom Elizabeth COGSWELL (d. 1661), married Richard
ERNLE, gent. of Dilton, Westbury, Wilts. (PCC will 1651), while Richard's
eldest brother Thomas ERNLE, gent., of Coulston (154/5/1-1639), married
Elizabeth COGSWELL's kinswoman (via a shared ADLAM descent), Praxed LAMBE,
daughter of John LAMBE, Esq., lord of the manor of East Coulston, Wilts.,
and granddaughter of Edith ADLAM, wife of John LAMBE (d.v.p. ca 1546).
These ADLAM forebears are shared by, among others, US presidents John ADAMS
father and son, and millions of American COGSWELL descendants, as well as
loads of English gentry and yeoman families, including, some Canadian
ADLAM/LAMBE/ERNLE descendants such as myself.
Richard ERNLE and Elizabeth COGSWELL's descendants appear to have died out
in the male line at Dilton, Westbury, Wilts., in the person of their
great-grandson, Richard ERNLE, d. 1786 and buried at Dilton.

Don't forget about HRH Princess Die's descent from the Cogswell family
via her American great-grandmother Frances, Lady Fermoy.
There's no mention of the earlier Cogswells before John (m. Elizabeth
Thomson) -- maybe in the follow-up article ...

RE: Cogswell article in forthcoming NEHGR also ADLAM, LAMBE
Hello, everyone.
Does anyone know if there has been any work done on the ancestry of Peter Massie, of New Kent County, Virginia?
I have read some speculation that he might have belonged to the line of Massie of Coddington, but I haven't seen anything more concrete than that.
My mother descends from him, thusly:
Peter Massie
Lucretia (or Elizabeth?) Massie, m. John Johns(t)on
Massie Johnson, m. (1725) Joseph Crew
Thomas Crew(s), m. Mary Talley (moved eventually to Stokes Co., N.C.)
Sarah Crews, m. George Jordan
Roland Jordan, m. "Millia" (i.e., Amelia/Emilia) Eliot, 1817, Stokes Co., N.C.
John E. Jordan, m. Mahala Thomasson, 1840, Stokes Co., N.C.
Lacy Ann Jordan (1842-1924), m. (1865) George Lemar (1841-1900)
Lula Victoria Lemar (1881-1954), m. Charlie A. Jones (1885-1918)
David Alexander Jones, m. Jessie Ila Jackson
Eva G. Jones, m. Charles Lowell Teague
David Randall Teague (myself)
Thanks in advance.
