Hello All,

My participation in the newsgroup has been restricted
of late, and will become more so now that the tax man
cometh. However, I did one to pass on the following, and
to thank John Watson for his providing the source for same,
as well as his other many contributions to the list.

The Brynmor Jones Library Archives (University of Hull)
has made available an extensive amount of transcribed
material, largely dealing as far as I see with the areas
around Hull (Holderness and other nearby areas in Yorkshire
and Lincolnshire). Among the various records, I lately
noted a valuable item: the record of a gift (apparently
part of a complicated transfer of properties) by Martin
de la See (later a knight) dated at Barmston, 10 August
1463, to which one of the parties was his son and
heir Christopher [1].

To the best of my knowledge, there is no other record
identifying Christopher, let alone his parentage: certainly
none was noted by Poulson in his research concerning the
lordship and manors of Holderness. Christopher was most
certainly named for his maternal grandfather, Christopher
Spencer, and most likely was born some time before 10
August 1442, on the assumption that he was of age when
a party to the grant of 1463. Although he died with heir
in his father's lifetime, he was obviously a loved and
respected member of the family: both his half-sisters
named their eldest sons for him, and the name Christopher
became a staple of the Hildyard and Kelke families
thereafter.

Errate et corrigenda:

For

"Although he died with heir in his father's lifetime",

read

"Although he died without heir in his father's lifetime,.."
