Another Royal Ascent for Ada (Byron) Lovelace

Legg inn av wjhonson » 18. desember 2007 kl. 23.30

Born Ada Augusta Byron, she married William King 1st Earl of Lovelace.

Ada was the only daughter of that famous Lord Byron the author of
Childe Harold's Pilgrimage (among other things)

Ada herself is most well-known as the author of a description of
Charles Babbage's mechanical general-purpose computer.

You can read all about Ada here
http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Ada_Lovelace

We see on Leo's great website here
http://www.genealogics.org/pedigree.php ... 1&tree=LEO
part of her pedigree.

I noticed that her mother Anne Isabella Milbanke has no ancestry
showing.

Anne was the daughter of Ralph Milbanke, Knt who changed his surname
to Noel. He was also the 6th Bart, of Halnaby, Darlington, Yorks.
Ralph was the eldest son of another Ralph Milbanke the 5th Bart who
was the eldest son of another Ralph Milbanke the 4th Bart.

At this point we have a hit, as I already had this Ralph 4th Bart as
he firstly married Elizabeth Darcy a 7th generation Cecil descendent.
Elizabeth died Oct 1720 whereupon shortly thereafter he married Anne
Delaval. One of the children of this second marriage was that Mark
Milbanke Governor of Newfoundland, another who must have been just a
bit older was Ralph the 5th Bart.

Getting back to Ada, her materal grandmother was Judith NOEL, daughter
of Edward Noel, Baron Wentworth (from 1745), 1st Viscount Wentworth of
Wellesborough (cr 1762) who was b 1715 and d 1774. He married Judith
Lamb daughter of William Lamb of Farndish, Northants and also of
Wellesborough, Leics

Ralph Milbanke the 5th Bart had for wife Elizabeth Hedworth, daughter
of John Hedworth, esq and MP; of Chester-le-Street in Durham.

By her father Lord Byron, Ada has a shortest royal ascent in 12 steps
to Scotland which is likely well-known, but by her mother Anne
Wentworth, she has a shortest royal ascent in 15 steps to England
which is:

Augusta Ada Byron

Anne Isabella Milbanke, suo jure Baroness /Wentworth/ "only daughter
and heir" born 17 May 1792, died 16 May 1860 St George's Terrace,
Regent's Park, Middlesex

Ralph /Milbanke/ alias Noel, Knt and 6th Bart of Halnaby, Darlington,
Yorks "eldest son"

Ralph /Milbanke/ , Knt and 5th Bart; MP Richmond; High Sheriff
Yorkshire 1753 "eldest son" born 1723 died 8 Jan 1793 buried at Croft

Anne /Delaval/ bap 8 Sep 1702 d 21 Mar 1765

Edward /Delaval/ bap 28 Oct 1664 d 3 Aug 1744

George /Delaval/ bur 3 Mar 1694/1695

John /Delaval/ of Dishington; Knt d 12 Aug 1652

Robert /Delaval/ b 1542 d 1 Jan 1607

At this point Robert Delaval has a royal ascent through both his
father Sir John Delaval and his mother Anne Ogle, both in seven steps,
well-known so I won't repeat them again.

Unfortunately this ascent does not hold as Anne Touchet was not
daughter of Humphrey Touchet and Elizabeth Courtenay. She was half-
sister of Humphrey. She was daughter of James Touchet, 5th Lord Audley
and his first wife Margaret de Ros.

Thanks, Suthen

I had her birthdate as later than Humphrey's, which must be an error. Is it
known when (or whenabouts) she was born?

Dear Monica

I have that Anne's father married twice, she is from the first marriage and
her brother Humphrey by the second.
Her father married (1) 1414/1415 Margaret de Ros she died in 1423, from this
marriage I have three children, Anne, John born 1420 and Elizabeth 1422. I
can only presume that Anne was the eldest. Margaret de Ros was born in 1398,
making her 16/17 when she married and so it seems likely she was born, say,
1416-1421.

Her father married (2) before September 1430, and the son Humphrey was born
"after 1430".

Thanks, Suthen

I had her birthdate as later than Humphrey's, which must be an error. Is
it
known when (or whenabouts) she was born?

Unfortunately this ascent does not hold as Anne Touchet was not
daughter of Humphrey Touchet and Elizabeth Courtenay. She was half-
sister of Humphrey. She was daughter of James Touchet, 5th Lord Audley
and his first wife Margaret de Ros.

Thanks Leo,

I must have transposed the numbers as I had circa 1441, and prob. meant c
1414. Now show her as c 1416.

Is anyone following up Humphrey's descendants? I am particularly interested
in the Bamfields, Hardings, Sydenhams and Bridges, also the connection to
the Courtenays. Is there a good source for Devonshire gentry families?

I am interested in the de Ros side as well, especially the Lewknors,
Barentyn, Stanley and Davies families.

As Anne's mother was Margaret, I suppose her closest royal ascent would be
through her great-great-great-great grandmother Joan of Acre, daughter of
Edward I. There is also her
great-grandmother Eleanor, a great-granddaughter of Henry III, which seems
to be the same distance.

thanks again,

MK

Her father married (1) 1414/1415 Margaret de Ros she died in 1423, from
this

can only presume that Anne was the eldest. Margaret de Ros was born in
1398,

Shame on Leo for not providing sources with weblinks, I shall proceed
to ignore you!

Except I have that James Touchet, 2nd Baron Audley married firstly on
24 Feb 1414/5 at Heleigh (citing tudorplace.com.ar) to Margaret de Ros
and that rather then her dying *in* 1423, I have her *living* in 1423
(citing Living Descendents of Blood Royal, Vol 2, "Cocke", pg 224-230)
(cf Ancestral Roots pg 13)

So that James married secondly sometime between 1424 and 1430 (citing
genealogics)

I think you are correct in regards to Joan of Acre, but Anne in her ancestor list has Edward I twice, as numbers 222 and 486.

She has Henry III three times, as numbers 444, 456 and 972.
Hope this helps?

Anne Touchet (daughter of James Touchet 2nd Baron Audley by his wife
Margaret de Ros) has two royal ascents that are equal.

In seven steps she ascends through her mother twice. Both of Margeret
de Ros' parents ascend to the English throne in five steps.

William, 6th Lord of /Ros/ , Treasurer of England 1403-4
son of
Beatrice de /Stafford/
daughter of
Margaret de /Audley/ , Baroness Audley de jure
daughter of
Margaret de /Clare/
daughter of
Joan of /Acre/
daughter of
Edward I, King of England

but also
Margaret d' /Arundel/
daughter of
John Arundel, Baron /Mautravers/
son of
Eleanor of /Grosmont/
daughter of
Henry of Grosmont, 3rd Earl of /Lancaster/
son of
Edmund, Earl of /Lancaster/ 1267
son of
Henry III, King of England

The CountyHistorian website was established February 2007 by me Will
Johnson, Professional Genealogist, Biographer and Historian. I've been
doing genealogy as a hobby for 30 years, and professionally since
2001. Although I started this business doing genealogy, I found that
it's the process of documenting that I enjoy. This naturally led to
pursuing articles that weren't strictly about a person's family tree.
I've writen several biographical articles without really finding out
much about the person's ancestors. Also I've writen histories of
companies and organizations.

Thanks, Will

John Sydenham who married Ursula Brydges had a daughter, Elizabeth, who
married a Bamfield, and she had a great-granddaughter who married a James
Rodd. I am trying to find more on the Rodd family.

Interestingly, I see that John is an ancestor of the late Queen Mother and
Alice Pleasance Liddell. I am also interested in his connections with the
Hyde and Somerset families.

I am interested in the de Ros side as well, especially the Lewknors,
Barentyn, Stanley and Davies families.

As Anne's mother was Margaret, I suppose her closest royal ascent would
be
through her great-great-great-great grandmother Joan of Acre, daughter
of
Edward I. There is also her
great-grandmother Eleanor, a great-granddaughter of Henry III, which
seems
to be the same distance.

Vis Devon is online
but if you could be more specific on *which* people you're interested
in, I'm sure I have them.

John Sydenham of Brimpton d 16 Apr 1557 is a Cecil 8 because his wife
Ursula Brydges is a 7, so I should have everyone within three steps of
them.

Humphrey Beauchamp, whom you mentioned earlier, had a daughter, Eleanor,
who married John Bamfield/Bampfylde.

Thanks, Renia, I had another look at this line and found all sorts of
interesting intersections.
