FTM Version 9
Can somebody assist me please?
I have been running Version 9 Family Tree Maker on Windows ME and have
heaps of info stored therein. A couple of weeks ago I developed a
'corruption' in the hard drive which necessatated a full strip and
rebuild. My computer buff decided to install Windows XP and while most
of my files are compatable, the message that I recieve from FTM is
that 'The file that you are trying to load is from a newer version of
Family Tree Maker and cannot be loaded'. I don't have a 'newer
version' so I can only assume that the problem is that Version 9 does
not run on XP.
Can somebody advise how I can run version 9 on XP so that I can access
my Family Tree files, please.
Thanks

XP. It might be worth checking the FTM website to see whether there's a
patch or a known problem with some versions (your XP version must be much
later than mine). I had to get a patch when I moved up to Vista.
Alternatively, look around and see whether you can't find a cut-price copy
of ver 10 or higher. I've seen ver 2005 for under 10 pounds in one of those
"reduced to clear" software bins in a department store.
Don't be tempted by the newest version without reading all the comments
about it here and on soc.genealogy.computing.

I don't know what's wrong with your system, but I didn't have trouble with
XP. It might be worth checking the FTM website to see whether there's a

Hello,
I do not believe Version 9 is compatible with XP. I had FTM Version 6 with
Windows 98. When I upgraded to Windows 2000 I had to upgrade to FTM Version 9.
I believe the specs stated it was for 95, 98, and 2000. I used 9 for years.
Now I upgraded to FTM Version 2006. 2006 moved some of the things I used most
often. I found them eventually so I am not as lost with the 2006 version.

If you try to load a FTM file that was created using FTM 10 or newer,
then you probably can't run that FTM file using FTM 9 or older.
I bet you can't load a file I made using FTM2008;
you'd get the same message.
Try obtaining a newer copy of FTM.
This is not a Microsoft problem.
