I have recently been working on this family and have complied a brief
pedigree in the following form, with sources noted.

Any comments or additions would be appreciated.

HUGH FAIRFAX, of Deeping Gate, in the Parish of Maxey & Grendon Co.
Northants. & Panton, Co. Lincoln.., M 1st Isabel (Described as "Isabel wife
of Hugh Fairfax, aged 23 years and more, his daughter" she was recorded as
daughter & heir with her sisters Amy and Alice of her father at his I.P.M.,
10 Feb. 1378), d. of Sir John de Harrington, Kt., of Grendon & Cotes, Co.
Northants. & Whissendine, Co. Rutland & his 1st wife Elizabeth (See
HARRINGTON). He had issue:

WILLIAM FAIRFAX, of Deeping Gate, in the Parish of Maxey & Grendon,
Co. Northants. & Panton, Co. Lincoln.., M --. He made a settlement of the
half-Manor of Grendon, Co. Rutland, 1442. In his son's I.P.M. he was
recorded as being seised of "3 Messuages, 3 cottages, 5 virgates & ¾ of
land, 40a meadow, 40a pasture, in Wyssynden, worth £4, held of George Fitz
Hugh, master & the clerks of the College of Pembrokehall, Cambridge, in
right of the College, by fealty and 40s rent yearly, for all service", 6 May
1498. He had issue:

Co. Northants. & Panton, Co. Lincoln.., M 1st Eleanor, d. of Sir William
Brereton, Kt. M 2nd 26 June 1455 at St. Mary's Aldermanry Church, London,
Agnes (She was recorded as living, 20 Sept. 1492), d. of Robert Canfield,
Esq. Died 5 Feb. 1497/8 - as recorded in his I.P.M. I.P.M., Rutland, 6 May
1498 & Northampton, 8 May 1498, - in which his father was recorded as "on
William Fayrefax [sic], his father" & he was recorded as holding at his
death "3 Messuages, 3 cottages, 5 virgates & ¾ of land, 40a meadow, 40a

8.Robert, Mus.D., Mus.B., Born 23 April 1464 at Deeping Gate.
Appointed a Gentleman of the Chapel Royal, by 6 Dec. 1497 when he was
granted a chaplaincy of the Free Chapel at Snodhill Castle, a post which he
relinguished a year later to Robert Cowper. He was organist of St. Alban's
Abbey, 1498 to 1502. Received a Mus.B from Cambridge University, 1501 & a
Mus.D in 1504. Received a D.Mus. from Oxford University, 1511. As a singer
he is first recorded in 1500 among the lay clerks at the funeral of Prince
Edmund, 3rd son of Henry VII; he was also present at the funeral of Queen
Elizabeth, wife of Henry VII, on 23 Feb. 1503. A favourite of Henry VIII as
lead musican to the highest courtly functions, including at the funeral of
Henry VII, 11 May 1509; at the coronation of Henry VIII, 24 June 1509; at
the funeral of Prince Henry, 27 Feb. 1511 & at the great Anglo-French summit
at the Field of the Cloth of Gold, 1520. Henry VIII admired his musical
talents & granted him numerous benefices during the last decades of his
life. From 1509 he was awarded an annuity of £6.2s.6d on top of his salary
as a Gentleman of the Chapel Royal. Henry VIII made him a Poor Knight of
Windsor to supplement his existing income, 10 Sept. 1514 & continued to
reward him by paying handsomely each New Year's day from 1516 to 1519 for
books of music. He is regarded as the most successful of the early Tudor
composers, & although he wrote in many genres, both vocal & instrumental, he
is best remembered for his mass settings. Three of his surviving works
(Salve regina, Regali Magnificat, and Ave lumen gratiae) are in the Eton
Choirbook. M Agnes. Died 24 Oct. 1521, aged 57. Bur. St. Albans Abbey
(tomb), Co. Herts. Will Proved at the Archdeaconry Court of St Albans,
1521. He had issue.

1491. Died 7 Sept. 1505 - as recorded in his I.P.M. I.P.M., Co. Lincoln,
20 Jan. 1505/6 - in which he was recorded as "William Fayrfax, Esquire" & as
being seised of the "Manor of Paunton by Grantham with the advowson of the
church of the manor, a water mill, 5 carucates of land, 8a meadow, 50a wood
lying in a park there, & 15s.7d rent to the same manor belonging, worth 20
marks, held of the socage of Grantham by knight-service & ¼ d rent yearly".

father's I.P.M., 20 Jan. 1505/6. M 1st John Peyton, Esq. M 2nd MYLES
WORSLEY, of Deeping Gate, in the Parish of Maxey, Co. Northants. (Died 1516.
I.P.M. - Rutland & Co. Northants.). M 3rd Robert Brudenell, Esq., of
Deeping Gate. Half of the Manor of Grendon passed to her on the death of
her father, Feb. 1497/8. She is recorded as having conveyed the half-Manor
of Grendon to Hugh Grantham, 1543/4. Died after 1543/4. She had issue:

Margaret's father you say William died 7 Sep 1505, but yet in her
write-up you say that she got half of the manor of Grendon "on the
death of her father Feb 1497/8"

That date sounds more appropriate for her grandfather.

++ the 1505 date is the correct date. The reference to Feb 1497/8 is an
error.
