Passports and Voyages

[Apologies for the multi-post. This was originally in soc.genealogy.methods
but that groups looks a bit dead]

Has anyone tried to determine whether an ancestor travelled abroad or not?
Unless I'm looking in the wrong places, it appears impossible to be certain
of who was actually travelling

I found a potential name match with an ancestor in a voyage from UK to
Philadelphia back in 1892. However, the outgoing details are pretty sparse,
as are the details taken on disembarkation. I can't find any details of
return voyages with the same name - in fact I can't find any details of
inbound ships to the UK at all, only outbound. I can't find her name in the
next US census, or any marriage records there. I tried looking through UK
passport applications but even though I haven't found it yet, I doubt I
would find many details associated with it (e.g. town or city of residence).

Does anyone have any suggestions for proving who really did travel on a
given occasion, or determining what they did next?

look for passports

look in the National Archives at Kew

the majority of material there is not catalogued in detail
just by the box, packet or volume

let alone put on line

Port records in the relevant county or city archives
local newspaper reports

an endless job
