The Lacys were responsible for the administration and
defense of Lincolnshire, Yorkshire, Lancashire,
Cheshire, Herefordshire, and Ireland appointed by
William Rufus and Henry 1 after the ransacking of the
north by William 1.

For 150 years they maintained that responsibility with
remarkable success addressing an area say 150 miles by
70 miles.

One matter is certain - they were not types to be
written off as suggested by Wil Johnson - their
services were too valuable to the kings in power.

My Question: How would you, if chosen by William Rufus
and Henry 1, organise your administration and
authority. The country has been ransacked, population
initially small spread over large distances. Also you
have to contend with the wild men of the North, the
Scots, The Welsh, and the Irish.

Your organisation, unlike Iraq and other unfortunate
countries, will be sound and reliable, meeting the
fiscal and defense needs of the kings in power.

How would you organise and control?

Sincerely Yours,

Paul Bulkley

Whilst you were researching the Lacy possessions did you come across
anything which would explain how three townships belonging to the manor
of Wakefield, namely Upperthong, Austonley and Holme, ended up in the
parish of a Lacy church, Almondbury?

I'm aware that there was some dispute in Domesday as to whether or not
they belonged to Wakefield but I've never come across anything which
goes on to say how it was resolved in this way.
