According to ancestry.com's index, this should be a John Phelps. To me,
the first name doesn't look the same as the other 'John' names on the
same page:
Year: 1810; Census Place: Jefferson, Rutherford, Tennessee; Roll: 63;
Page: 42;
Any consensus on this being John or some other name?
Thanks in advance,
Cathy

Assuming you meant page 24 instead of 42, it is a bit different
from the other 'John's, particularly the 'o', but it still looks
more like 'John' than anything else. Heritage Quest indexed it
as 'John', too.

It seems quite obviously to be "Jehu Phelps," to me. Compare to John
Wallace, on the line above.

Thanks for checking. I was leaning toward 'Jehu' or 'Jehru' because the
name just looks so different from the rest of the men named John on that

Well, I don't think I've ever run across a "Jehru," but I've found lots of
men named "Jehu" in my forty years of research--it's a good old Biblical
name!

According to HQ, there is no page 42.
I know what you mean about multiple page numbers; I never know
which to use.
