Brochu Family Tree

Legg inn av Jst2swt » 02 nov 2007 18:43:55

I've been trying to start a Brochu family tree, but being very new to this,
and knowing very little about my mother's family, I'm finding it very
difficult. If this isn't the correct forum for this I apologize, but I
would appreciate any help.

TIA

You can help us help you by telling us where you've looked,
what you've done so far. If you do that, I think you'll
find the folks here more than willing to help - tips, tricks,
suggestions, things and places to avoid, research methods.

It's a grab bag, some times a free-for-all, but the denizens of
this group are generally generous with their time and expertise
and genuinely helpful to newcomers who show they've done their
homework.

Well, I've literally just started, but I have joined several genealogy sites
(ie rootsweb.com, ancestry.com, ancestryspace.com, genealogy.com). I have
found my grandfather's (Romeo) ss# info (birth, death and city of death).
My grandmother's name was Marion (i don't know maiden name). They had at
least three children: Raymond, Rita and Priscilla. My aunt Rita passed away
a few years ago. My mother has also passed away. The last know location
for Raymond is Texas. I know Rita had three children; Freddy, Roger and
Patty. I think I may have found Roger, I'm just waiting for a phone call.
That's about all I know right now

OMG, that's him!!!! I'm so excited I can hardly type. My mother,
Priscilla, was born after 1930. That's why she's not listed. I knew they
had more children, but only knew the ones I had met as a very young child.
Unfortunately, my parents moved to California when I was two years old. I
don't know why the family rarely talked about my mother's side of the
family.

I think I found Romeo in the 1910 census for Warren, Bristol, RI, mis-
indexed by ancestry.com as Brocher. He was living with parents and
siblings; birth year of 1892 matches the other records. Ancestry
transcribes parents as Cerile, age 48, and Agnaise, age 53, both from
Canada/French.

Children include Calista (20), Romeo (18), Alexandre (14), and Charles E.
(8); all children but Charles born in Canada. Also in the family is a
son-in-law Romeo Gagnon (28) and wife (their daughter) ____ilda (27),
both born in Canada, and child German (looks like), born in RI. The
writing's pretty dim here.

It would be useful to follow this up in the 1900 census if possible.
Father gives the emigration year as 1896, mother and children 1897. There
are some other Brochu families in Warren RI as well.

Why don't you just sit back and let everybody do it for you. It's one heck
of a lot easier and doesn't involve any time and effort.

Alternatively , invest some of of your time learning how to access and read
censuses (and other availabl;e information) - you will get exactly the same
information as the posters that have helped you but with one hell of a lot

I grew up in Riverside, RI (abt 5 miles from Warren) in the early 1950's and
there was a local Brochu family with lots of sons. An Alexander Brochu

OK, now you've seen what I meant by (most of) the folks here

being friendly and helpful. But you do need to learn to
help yourself, as well. From the list of places you've
been, it appears you've made a fair start - now you need to
work on developing your research skills and tools.

What genealogy program, if any, are you using? Because I don't
use Windows _or_ MAC-OS, I can't personally recommend any of
the more popular programs; guaranteed, however, that there's
somebody - many somebodies - who've used one or more of them
and have thoughts about them. That said, there are a couple of
"generic" recommendations I can make: there are at least 2
free genealogy programs available, PAF from the Mormon
familysearch.org site and Legacy. Either of these is more than
enough to get you started if you haven't already chosen a
program. Whatever program you choose, the two named or some
other, get your information entered early on - it's a first step
toward organization.

Document everything you can - get copies of the census records
relating to your family, as well as birth, marriage and death
certificates. Find where they were naturalized and get copies of
_those_ records. And, most important of all, unless you've
verified information for yourself, treat it like a week-old flounder
- if it doesn't pass the sniff-test, put it in the pending file
and put off entering it in your growing database (not everything on
the web is true, complete or accurate, especially those family trees
you'll find on RootsWeb and Ancestry, among others). If you have to
force it to fit, don't.

HTH,
Bob Melson

Well Terry, thank you so much for your support. For your information, I
have been spending literally hours on the internet trying to find
information. I have joined a few genealogy site but unfortunely, don't have
the financial resources at this time to get the "premium" information. I
have however found my cousing through research and he will be able to give
me some of the information I need since he grew up in the same town as my
maternal relatives whereas I grew up 3000 miles away and lost my mother when
she was very young and I never thought to ask her for information on her
family. I thought this newsgroup was for help!!!

Hope you have a wonderful day!!!

Hi Robert

Thank you so much for your words of support. As I told "Terry", I have been
spending many hours online the last couple of days looking for information
(that's how new I am to this). I was able to locate a cousin of mine who
lived in the same town as my grandparents and he was able to give me my
grandmother's maiden name.

I agree that I have a lot to learn, and I'm very willing to learn. I've
download the 1940 census from Rhode Island (very very large PDF file) which
I'm still trying to figure out.

I had downloaded "MyHeritage Family Tree". It looks fairly simple and
straight-forward. If anyone has a better suggestion, I would appreciate it.
I'm using Windows Home Vista Premium 32 bit.

Again Robert, thank you for your help and support!!

Priscilla, was born after 1930. That's why she's not listed. I knew
they
had more children, but only knew the ones I had met as a very young
child.
Unfortunately, my parents moved to California when I was two years old.
I
don't know why the family rarely talked about my mother's side of the
family.

Liz, I don't know where saki found that information. I have asked where he
gets his information. He apparently works at a college where he has access
to many databases.

I found the same info on Ancestry.com under the US WWII Draft registration.
His address at the time was 133 N Main St Warren RI. Marion E Brochu is
listed as the person who would always know his address. His employer was
Joseph Cohen, who had a scrap metal business. Romeo is listed as 49 yrs old.

If there is anyone you are interested in just tell me. I have full

Ancestry offers WW II 1942 draft registration cards (men born 1877-97; 66
hits on Brochu) and Army 1938-46 enlistment records (54 hits) as part of one
of its subscription packages.

Also, Ancestry has 1917-18 WW I draft registration cards (76 hits on
Brochu).

"It's "she", actually, but that's okay. As I mentioned in email
yesterday afternoon, this info comes from ancestry.com. I have access to
the library edition. You may be able to find a library in your region
that offers this database.

Well Terry, thank you so much for your support. For your information, I
have been spending literally hours on the internet trying to find
information. I have joined a few genealogy site but unfortunely, don't
have the financial resources at this time to get the "premium"
information. I have however found my cousing through research and he
will be able to give me some of the information I need since he grew up
in the same town as my maternal relatives whereas I grew up 3000 miles
away and lost my mother when she was very young and I never thought to
ask her for information on her family. I thought this newsgroup was for
help!!!

Hope you have a wonderful day!!!

Why don't you just sit back and let everybody do it for you. It's one
heck
of a lot easier and doesn't involve any time and effort.

Alternatively , invest some of of your time learning how to access and
read
censuses (and other availabl;e information) - you will get exactly the
same
information as the posters that have helped you but with one hell of a
lot
more satisfaction that you found it yourself.

Donna please learn to kill file or ignore the grouches or spoil sports
and never feed a troll

I do stuff for other people for fun and to show them how to do
genealogy and return the many favours others have done for me
