Dear Newsgroup ~
Sir William de Mortimer, Knt., son of Roger de Mortimer, Knt., of
Wigmore, Herefordshire, was styled "dear cousin" by Roger le Bigod,
Earl of Norfolk, Marshal of England, in a charter dated 1275-1280
[Reference: Marc Morris, The Bigod Earls of Norfolk in the 13th
Century (2005): 220-221].
The two men were related in 3rd and 3rd degrees (or, if you prefer 2nd

(died 1219), Earl of Pembroke (or Strigoil), hereditary Master Marshal
as shown below:
1. William Marshal, Knt., Earl of Pembroke (or Strigoil), hereditary
Master Marshal, died 1219.
2. Eve Marshal, married William de Brewes, Knt., of Kington,
Herefordshire.
3. Maud de Brewes, married Roger de Mortimer, Knt., of Wigmore,
Herefordshire.
4. William de Mortimer, Knt.
1. William Marshal, Knt., Earl of Pembroke (or Strigoil), hereditary
Master Marshal, died 1219.
2. Maud Marshal, married Hugh le Bigod, 5th Earl of Norfolk, Lord High
Steward of England.
3. Hugh le Bigod, Knt., of Levisham, Yorkshire, Justiciar of England,
married Joan de Stuteville.
4. Roger le Bigod, 7th Earl of Norfolk, Marshal of England (died
1306).

you show Eve Marshal marrying William De Brewes. I always have thought
that the name is De Braose. In fact, there is a fairly good website
dedicated to theis particular family:

Am I wrong to think that the name is not Braose? Or is it just a
different spelling of the same name?

In medieval documents the name appears under a number of spellings.
Historians in the past have usually chosen to standardize this as
Braose, but Mr. Richardson has simply chosen to use an alternative
representation of the name.

taf fails to mention that Douglas has written the name DE BREWES the way
many of the British actually PRONOUNCE it.

Thank you for your prompt response. So, Eve Marshal's mother-in-law;
Grace Brewer (wife of Reginald De Braose d. 1228 Lord of Avergavenny)
has the "real" last name of Brewer or is this a mistake and her name
is actually "Braose"? I show Grace Brewer's parents as William Brewer,
Baron of Horsley and Beatrice De Vaux.
