Trying to find a MULDOON family in USA between 1858 and 1871
A couple of posters on soc.genealogy.britain have suggested that I may
be able to get help here in tracking down a MULDOON family, ancestors of
my wife, during their stay of about 10 years in USA. They arrived in New
York from Liverpool, England in 1858, had a daughter born, possibly in
St Louis, in about 1862 and were back in England by, at the latest, the
time of our 1871 census, some of them a few years earlier.
I've tried without success to find them on the 1860 US census during a
couple of Ancestry's free access periods and I don't know how I might
find any records of the daughter's birth or christening. I understand
that birth registration was not in force in Missouri at the likely date
of her birth, so I would be looking for a christening record (Roman
Catholic).
Any help would be very welcome.
This is what I know of them:
Francis MULDOON was born about 1820 in County Tyrone, Ireland. His wife
Eliza MULLEN was born about 1823-28 in either Ireland or Liverpool. They
married Jan. 14, 1844 in Liverpool and all children prior to crossing
the Atlantic were born in Liverpool. Francis appears on British
Censuses as a Provision Dealer, though on his death certificate
(Liverpool 1895) he was promoted to Master Greengrocer.
The manifest of the Ship Baltic of the Zerega Line (not the Collins Line
ship of the same name) shows Francis and "Mrs" MULDOON arriving in New
York on Aug 18, 1858 accompanied by their six children aged from 11
years to 11 months (respectively Han[n]ah, John, Thomas, Eliza, Francis
and Mary) and also an orphaned niece Sarah, age 15, born in Blackburn,
Lancashire. Curiously, "The country in which they severally belong" on
the manifest is shown as U.S. America, and Francis's occupation is shown
as a Brazier. (It definitely is the right family, everything else fits.)
The next record that I find of any of them is of the marriage of John,
age 22, back in Liverpool on Oct. 18, 1869. They then appear, except for
Sarah and Mary, on the British census of April 2, 1871. That census also
shows a Susan MULDOON in an Industrial School (a residential school for
"out of parental control" children) in Liverpool age 8. The census entry
says that Susan was born in Liverpool but that is almost certainly
inaccurate, because I believe that this is the same Susan MULDOON who
appears as the daughter of Francis and with his other children
(Francis's wife Eliza died in 1873) on the 1881 British census as "born
in America, British Subject" and in the 1891 British census as born "St
Louis America".
If anybody can find these people in the time that they were in USA, I
would be very grateful.

Thanks for that. But I can't imagine that they'd be willing to search
their records, especially as I've no idea which church (if any) might
have performed the christening and really have only an approximate one
year plus time span. And, that's only closed parishes, the parish (if
any) of registration may still be open.
Or maybe I should just write and see what I get?

Try asking how their older, pre 1870s, records are arranged

for researching if you lack a parish? *BUT* no names or

thank-you note (and details if their price is right). If
their price isn't right, there are various organizations who
recommend genies for hire.
But, first, try the LDS FHLC to see what they've got ... you
may get lucky and there's only one parish in St. Louis at
the time. [Anyone here who is Catholic and USA know whether
the parishes had to send in copies to their Bishop once a year?]

Re: Trying to find a MULDOON family in USA between 1858 and
From the St. Louis cemetetary list there are a bunch of
Muldoons listed at the "Calvary Cemetery" in St.Louis, my
guess is that there was a church at the time for the Irish /
English.
http://www.stlcathcem.com/iSearch.aspx
My experience with requesting church records is that they
need some information such a date range, name, address of
where they lived at the time(narrows down the churches) if
possible. They may or may not find records if your
information is incorrect or have no idea where they lived.
They do request a donation (anywhere from $15 to $20)
You might try emailing the address at
<http://www.archstl.org/>
and asking questions there.
Meanwhile, during regular business hours you can talk to a
librarian who may be able to do a lookup in a city
directory, this may give you an address.
http://www.slpl.org/slpl/library/article240097461.asp
Hope this helps.

ps The church diocese seems to be getting a new web page and
the library turns theirs off at nights. (odd)

You may be right about the Calvary Cemetery. Quite a few MULDOONs though
none during the period that mine may have been in the area.
I'll follow up your other suggestions.
I take it that nobody has had any more success than I did in finding
this family on the 1860 census. I can imagine that there must have been
large numbers of transient families at that time and wonder how
completely the census may have captured these people.

There is one Frank in New York in 1860.
There are a ton of Muldoons in St. Louis. 1860 - perhaps the

Any other last names to try?
