NARA

Wife is going toward the neighborhood where NARA is, and I almost decided
to take the trip until I realized I'm not very prepared and won't get
much out of it. What kinds of goodies are NARA best for, thinking mainly
in terms of the stuff that isn't available on HQ or Ancestry?

WHICH branch? Each one has something different.

If she's going to Atlanta's branch, an eyeball of the WW-I
draft registrations can be informative as compared to the image.

If she's going to DC, the Unfiled Papers for Confederate
soldiers is priceless (and needs to be moved upward on
someone's priority list for digitization), and the 1861-65
income tax lists are intriguing (and likewise need a higher
priority). Service records for soldiers in the American
wars prior to WW-I are there and can be pulled for viewing
and/or copying. Or hop the free shuttle out to College
Park's Archives II and the WW-II stuff, newsreels, etc.

I'm not as familiar with the others, but each of them has
something the others don't.

Chicago. Saw a few nifty historical things but nothing jumped out at me
regarding genealogy.
