Diana, Princess Of Wales & Continuing Mindless Celebrity Wor
Diana was such an elegant classy woman not one "celebrity" has ever eclipsed
her although one in particular tries so hard. The world is lost without her
we must never forget her but we should allow her to rest in peace for the
sake of her sons.

Renia wants Old Money and a title -- but in the hands of a man somewhat
younger than herself -- and would not settle for less than an Earl.
Unfortunately, she's not getting any such offers -- is currently married --
and is, so far as we know, not planning to bump her husband off.
She's too old [55 on 14 December] faded and shopworn to be good mistress
material -- so that option is out.
It's a sorry case.

Delusions of grandeur? She was mother to a future king and would have
become queen herself had she not divorced. You don't get much grander
than that.
You could marry Bill Gates.....or be Oprah.....
New money. It doesn't count.

the news media became entirely and, perhaps, unreasonably critical of
the delay although it soon became apparent that what had happened was
the death of a major world figure -someone who somehow managed through
the sincerity of her positions to be equally liked in the east as well
as the west and someone who, had she lived, would have and could have

Stupifyingly inaccurate, unless you are Catholic and want the Pope to

The bottom line is that certain groups have a huge self interest in
emphasizing not only negative aspects of Diana, but also the near
hysterical insistence that she was of none other than tabloid
importance , had no political implications, had little intelligence
and was to be discounted as historically inconsequential.
Those who accept such a view are guilty of the most superficial
thinking and will find themselves easily manipulatable by the media
and the pollution of "prevailing" opinion.
Read the following previous comments by me for details.
"Diana represented a historical nexus, no matter
if by intent or by the accident of history, a crossroads between
a future in which the monarchy in England gradually diminishes
to nothing (as happened in France) and a future in which the monarchy
takes a more active role in society and politics with significant
contributions (such as happened a decade ago in the former
country of Yugoslavia where the royal house took an active
part in the opposition and removal of the scum Slobodan Milosevich. "
"There are those, particularly the news media, who expend
ENORMOUS effort focusing on her dresses, her affairs, her divorce,
her psychological difficulties but they are united in expending
effort in AVOIDING any discussion of her politics.
any discussion of her socio-political significance
precisely because the common people began to
appreciate the openness and sincerity of Diana in
contrast to the stultifying silence of wooden heads
like Prince Phillip and the rest of them. "
And THIS from 2004:
"In answer to the question raised by an earlier respondent as to who
would
want to remember Diana, the answer is everyone who understands the
significance of her philosophy and the courageous political positions
that she represented."
"The emergence of several modern technologies, not the least of which
is the
Internet, spell doom for the traditional nation states whose wars and
diminution of the importance of the individual are characteristic of
the
historical era that is now coming to a close."
"Diana became a historical focal point for the emergent re-unification

social
causes which, especially in the case of the land mine issue, placed

"The reality of her significance, the importance of the forces which
had
so excited the masses, and the desperation of the Queen's advisors all
came to a head immediately after her death when there was some delay,
intentional or otherwise in the return of the royal family and some of
the news media became entirely and, perhaps, unreasonably critical of
the delay although it soon became apparent that what had happened was
the death of a major world figure -someone who somehow managed through
the sincerity of her positions to be equally liked in the east as well
as the west and someone who, had she lived, would have and could have
played a major world role in accepting the position which, we now
know,
was to be offered by Blair."

railing at the attention paid to her even in death and all the while

The inference you are making is that if the British Monarchy declines,
it's because the RF failed to listen to Diana; and if the British
Monarchy strengthens, it's because Diana helped it to do so.
There IS a god in heaven because someone actually read
what I posted and understood what I was saying!!!
Yes, CORRECT! Thank you. (Cit Jim)
Contrary to your beliefs, the RF will survive as long as public
opinion in the UK and the other Realms permits it to do so. In the 10
years since Diana died, there has been an overall increase in the
popularity and acceptance of the Monarchy and the RF. It's true that
the old deference is either not there or has diminished; but as many
writers have noted this started in the 60's and 70's.
People don't form opinions about the activities of the RF based on
what former or deceased members of the RF said or did They base those
views on what the living members say or do.
"There are those, particularly the news media, who expend
ENORMOUS effort focusing on her dresses, her affairs, her divorce,
her psychological difficulties but they are united in expending
effort in AVOIDING any discussion of her politics.
The emphasis on dresses, affairs, divorce etc. is there because of
PUBLIC DEMAND. The media would not publish so much of it if the demand
declined. As to her politics, she had none. "Thick as a plank, that's
me" she once said.
any discussion of her socio-political significance
precisely because the common people began to
appreciate the openness and sincerity of Diana in
contrast to the stultifying silence of wooden heads

Again, this vast overgeneralization and stereotyping grossly dumbs
down a complex family and Diana's involvement in it

"In answer to the question raised by an earlier respondent as to who

and have children. Later, it morphed into celebrity, hair, frocks, and
what have you.

One can see why. The poor man was so nervous that for most of his life
he suffered from an appalling stammer and we would listen to his

He and his wife, Queen Elizabeth were perhaps the most respected
monarchs the Kingdom ever had, especially the Queen, as her love and

In particular, she was applauded for her remark during the war that
after Buckingham Palace was bombed, she felt she could now look the
people of London's East End - the dock area which was pounded by
German bombers - in the eye.
She and the King made many trips there to reassure and comfort those

if by intent or by the accident of history, a crossroads between
a future in which the monarchy in England gradually diminishes
to nothing (as happened in France) and a future in which the monarchy
takes a more active role in society and politics with significant
contributions (such as happened a decade ago in the former
country of Yugoslavia where the royal house took an active
part in the opposition and removal of the scum Slobodan Milosevich. "
The inference you are making is that if the British Monarchy declines,
it's because the RF failed to listen to Diana; and if the British
Monarchy strengthens, it's because Diana helped it to do so.
"Thick as a plank, that's
me" she once said.
any discussion of her socio-political significance
precisely because the common people began to
appreciate the openness and sincerity of Diana in
contrast to the stultifying silence of wooden heads
like Prince Phillip and the rest of them. "
Again, this vast overgeneralization and stereotyping grossly dumbs
down a complex family and Diana's involvement in it
And THIS from 2004:
"In answer to the question raised by an earlier respondent as to who
would
want to remember Diana, the answer is everyone who understands the
significance of her philosophy and the courageous political positions
that she represented."
Diana had no political positions. Her philosophy was to marry a prince
and have children. Later, it morphed into celebrity, hair, frocks, and
what have you.
"The emergence of several modern technologies, not the least of which
is the
Internet, spell doom for the traditional nation states whose wars and
diminution of the importance of the individual are characteristic of
the
historical era that is now coming to a close."
I assume you are claiming here that Diana invented the Internet?
"Diana became a historical focal point for the emergent re-unification
of
popular conceptions of royalty in which a bond existed between the
subjects and the royals and in which she became a proponent of various
social
causes which, especially in the case of the land mine issue, placed
her not only
in complete opposition to the about to be extinct forces of
politically
conservative orthodoxy, but also made her become a historical nexus
for
various modern political trends and this last must have been very very
threatening to those political atavists who were already aware that
the
cozy world of 1840 or even 1940 was no longer possible."
Stupifyingly inaccurate, unless you are Catholic and want the Pope to
elevate her to sainthood.
"The news media, along with the atavists (a word which is used here to
signify the dodo birds whoose influence
still extends throughout the kingdom) soon made an alliance of
circumstance in which every opportunity was made to portray Diana as a
frail, possibly unstable, and therefore completely intellectually
unimportant person
while they emphasized her travels, penchant for expensive clothes and
made
other emphasis on entirely irrelevant aspects of her life."
You could add: "They were helped by Diana herself, who saw no
incongruity between comforting homeless people one evening and jetting
off the next day with the latest boyfriend, dressed in her expensive
clothes and focussing on other irrelevant aspects of her life she
obviously thought were very important."
Breton
I think she probably wanted someone to care about her as a person and
not as an icon. Women are women, regardless of their circumstances, as
the Queen herself proved by having four children and obviously loving
not only them, but also the other children in her life, like Princess
Margaret's children. Her continuing affection for Prince Philip shows

No, the Head of State and the person at the head of the Government
(Prime Minister) are two different people.
That's why I wrote "become"....if the monarchy was abolished.
That would be a fundamental change...maybe even necessitating a
written constitution?
The Prime Minister still would not "become" head of state. Our Prime
Minister is not head of state. That job would go to an elected
President and would be an expensive way of going about electing
someone who could interfere with the government's business in the way
the Queen does not.
No necessity for that - the President could be appointed, just like the
German one.
The Queen counts for continuity. If the worst
came to the worst, she could sack the Prime Minister at her will.
That is complete nonsense.
She cannot change laws, however, because that is the role of Government.
You mean Parliament. Americans distinguish between the Executive and the
Legislature.
As to the Constitution, it is written down. The Constitution is the
Law of the Land, as it stands, and most of it is written. Some of it
belongs so far back in the national memory and psyche, it is only
written down at a local level. The problem with belonging to the EU, is
that the
unelected EU is snipping away at English law, so our Constitution is
being rewritten for us, whether we want it or not. We have no choice.
Mr Blair's final act was to back-handedly sign us up for the full EU
Constitution, without consulting the people by referendum.
Nonsense.
If the Monarchy was abolished, and if the UK Constitution is slowly
being eroded, then I don't know what would happen. Had their been no
EU interference, I would have said that the UK would have an elected
President as Head of State, with a Prime Minister at the Head of
Government, with the Law of the Land acting as the Constitution.
However, the power of the EU is such, that it would not surprise me if
the British Monarch was abolished, then an unelected beaurocrat in the
EU might become unelected Head of State of the United Kingdom, with
the Prime Minister acting on its behalf.
The scenario is terrifying.
Paranoid nonsense.
What do you think the ceremonies are all about? Choose one to talk
about.
Formal appointment of ministers.....unless they can only be
appointed by the monarch, isn't that just a formality/ceremony? Or,
if the Queen refused to formally appoint Brown...would he not have
become Prime Minister?
If The Queen found Brown to be so odious, or dangerous, then she has
it within her power to refuse to appoint him as Prime Minister.
Completely untrue.
However, she never exercises this. When the Queen appoints a minister, it
makes it all official and it sanctions him in law, which renders his
position valid under the Constitution.
The kindest thing to say is that this is a misunderstanding of
constitutional theory.
Approval of certain (what types?) of legislation....does this mean
the laws will not go into effect if the Queen doesn't approve them?
Or, as in the US...where the President has veto power...if the
President refuses to sign legislation, it still takes effect by
default.
Bestowing honours.....sounds like the epitome of ceremonial
powers.
They way in which the honours are bestowed is ceremonial, and has
followed the same pattern for 1,000 years, give or take.
Not really - most traditions have been invented fairly recently.
Modern honours are more practical than of old. Such honours are given
to people who have devoted their lives to enhance Britain such as
sports stars, entertainers, scientists, charity workers and magnates
who have contributed financially to Britain's welfare. That latter is
the same as it has always been, but it was and is always open to the
abuse by people who pay their way, just for the honours they may
receive at the end. In the case of entertainers, their value is that
they increase the revenue into Britain because of the popularity of
the goods they market.
I remember reading somewhere that the Queen formally opens
Parliament. If this is true, does Parliament not open if the Queen
refuses to open it?
It is The Queen's Parliament. The Government acts in Parliament on
behalf of The Queen, and The Queen acts on behalf of the people.
Parliament acts in session, and if The Queen doesn't formally open it,
no, there is no Parliament.
Except that someone else can open it on her behalf - which has happened
twice.
The British Constitution is such, that there is a triumverate of
checks and balances, with everybody, technically, acting on behalf of
the people.
The Queen checks the power of Parliament. This stems from the time of
the English Civil War when Parliament had too much power. On the other
hand, Parliament checks the power of The Queen. This stems from the
time of Magna Carta and Charles I, when the monarch had too much
power. The third actor in this scenario, is the judiciary, which
checks the power of both Parliament and The Queen, while the other two
check the power
of the Judiciary.
That is not really true - you have got your checks and balances wrong.
Tony Blair destroyed a fundamental part of the UK Constitution, and
these checks and balances, when he removed the Judiciary from this
triumverate. Now it stands as only Queen versus Parliament, and
Parliament is getting stronger and stronger, until you, like many
others, think she has no role.
Nonsense.
Take that alongside the growing power of the EU, and you are
witnessing the death of Great Britain. It's tragic.
Nonsense.
Prince Philip was also a Prince in his own right. He was born on
Corfu, Greece, but was a member of the Danish Royal Family.
But he isn't a true Prince of Great Britain?
He is a Danish Prince in his own right, but the Queen created the
Duchy of Edinburgh for him. To be honest, I can't remember if she
made him an English prince or not. I should remember, but I don't!
He's Greek - as people keep telling you. He was created a Prince of the
United Kingdom (he had automatically become HRH on marriage) - but only
because they kept calling him "Prince Philip", in much the same way as
they kept calling Diana "Princess Diana".

Your lack of knowledge of any of the background to the whole sordid Diana

Why doubt it?
Why on earth should he?
You provide a constitutional crisis with no motive.
In the days of constitutional rebels like Blair and Hague you may well have
seen a major change, but with a Scotsman on the one hand and an Eaton and
Oxford educated aristocrat on the other there's no will in the major
political parties to impose some sort of major Constitutional upheaval on
England.
The republican element in New Labour has long gone, dead or marginalised,
mostly dead. The Tory radicalisers are marginalised even in the more rabid
areas of the gutter press. The only part of the old republican triumvirate
left still spitting venom and feathers and giving a platform to the 'anti-

what concerns me more, is their self-imposed segregation and the

Oh give it a rest Jim - you are the only one here with a Diana fixation.

As Surreyman is trying to gently point out to you - your citing of that
ridiculous 'evidence' above to prove that Diana was important in some
way just reveal you to be bordering on the insane. That's why I didn't
answer either. Honestly - It's embarrassing.
That she was important is undeniable.
Of course it is deniable - I just denied it.
Your opinion by itself bears no weight.
So have millions upon millions of other people.
Particularly those who have never heard of her or who have no interest in
her. Each to their own.
She still makes front-page news. Newspapers only do that to sell their
papers. They must figure they will sell more newspapers if they pop her on
the front page so they must figure she is still popular or of interest.
59 million British people did NOT go to her funeral. I never even watched
it on TV.
32.1 million people in the Britain watched the funeral.
3 million people actually attended the funeral or lined the streets in
London that day.
More than 1 million bouquets to her memory were left in the streets of
London.
I followed the route myself the next day, as did many others, and the
aroma from the flowers was phenomenal.
She was married to the future King of England and mother to a future
King.
And a cricketers son.
Which cricketer would that be?
First, she was friends with many men without actually sleeping with them.
Second, while Harry is undoubtedly a Spencer with the Spencer colouring,
there are photos where he looks very like Prince Charles.
snip
Could be your wife or girlfriend has slept with more men than Diana ever
did.
Some of them did and good luck to them - but none of them was married to
royalty at the time (and funded by us as it happens), none of them was in
a public position of responsibility and certainly none of them were
having vicarious claims made for them that they were some kind of saint
or potential ambassador for the country.
You're quite elitist, aren't you. It's alright for your women to sleep
around but not for Diana, if she really did. You seem to have fallen for
quite a bit of hype yourself.
Note your own words: none of them were having vicarious claims MADE FOR
THEM. She didn't claim to be a saint or ambassador herself.

Good Point, Renia
Diana couldn't be expected to personally vet every chauffeur herself.
Her staff -- especially the bodyguards -- had the responsibility to do that.
In the instant case, the intoxicated chauffeur, Henri Paul, seems to have
been very clever at hiding his intoxication.
Monsieur Paul was also Deputy Head of Security of the Hotel Ritz, so he had
heightened responsibilities for ensuring the safety of Hotel Ritz guests,
particularly such high-profile guests.

Yeah - well that too I guess.
But if she hadn't let herself be driven by a pisshead Frog wanker in

first place it is statistically extremely unlikely that she would
have died
with or without a seatbelt.
I doubt she knew he was drunk so put her faith in whoever told her she
should get in the chauffeur-driven car.
In other words, it's all the fault of whomsoever employed the
inebriated
French driver.
Will give you three guesses who that was.
We all know who that is and he can't handle it.
Does rather sound like the man is searching around for someone to assign
blame, if for nothing else to assuage his own guilty mind.
However leave us consider the facts, shall we?
Fayed employed chauffer got tight from drink that was served at a Fayed
owned hotel. Body guards, also employed by Fayed did nothing to prevent
the chauffer who was by now pissed as an owl from driving the son of
their employer and Diana.
Oh sure - none of it was the fault of poor helpless saint Diana.
I'll tell you something - I don't let *anybody* drive me unless I know
exactly how good they are and exactly how much they've had to drink.
Maybe once a year at most. It's rare I'll even take a taxi unless
absolutely unavoidable.
It's called taking responsibility for oneself.
Indeed, but you're not used to being chauffeur-driven, are you? She was.
Ain't hindsight grand?

in 9 different languages on the reverse. If you come to England and want
to go through the planning offices or any other offices, you should either
learn the language or find someone who knows the language. It is not the
Council's responsibility to translate documents. They have to pay someone
to do that and I have to pay that someone in my local taxes. If I buy a

their local councils to pander to my linguistic inabilities. I expect to

She appeared on "Empire's Children" recently, about how "British

India and spent much of her youth there, instead of going there age 2.
However, IMDB is in dispute with the above, saying she went to India age

You said "tend to come from quite wealthy backgrounds". Vide infra.
....Truman, Eisenhower, Johnson, Nixon, Ford, Carter, Reagan and Clinton.
They ALL did NOT come from ***Quite Wealthy Backgrounds***.
SO, of the last ELEVEN Presidents, EIGHT did NOT come from ***Quite Wealthy
Backgrounds***.
Going further back one can find many more excellent examples -- such as
Jackson, Lincoln, A. Johnson, Grant, Wilson, Coolidge -- just to name a few
more.
If they made money on their own that's an entirely different thing and part

Why do you think so many Brits come here to live and want to become American

None of them came from Quite Wealthy Backgrounds.
I'd imagine that because of their positions before entering politics that
both Reagan and Eisenhower would have been quite wealthy. However I take
the point with the rest. Seemingly the US is far more egalitarian than the
average Brit gives it credit for. It does seem that an ordinary person can
hope to be President just as much as PM.

Of course anyone can theoretically become President but the feeling
over here (and I concede we can get things wrong) is that American
Presidents tend to come from quite wealthy backgrounds.

The weirdest example is Yales' Skull and Bones Society -- John Kerry
and George Bush were both members. Early in the 2004 campaign the
other major candidate (Howard Dean) was also a Yale man. Gore went to
Harvard. All but Dean are sons of Senators, but Dean has a pretty
strong connection to the Aristocracy -- his Grandmother used one of
Dubya's grandmothers as a bridesmaid.
Right now the front-runner is a President's wife. McCain's father, and
grandfather were Admirals. Romney's dad was a Governor. Obama's a
strange case -- he's also an 8th cousin to Dick Cheney on his mother's
side, and his father may have been a Kenyan Aristocrat. Guliani and
Edwards are the only ones who can argue they're 100% non-blue-blooded.
