Of course you know that two of John Adams' sons were either mentally
unstable or alcoholic. It continued through the generations.

It's certainly interesting to see how many folks favored by birth and
fortune turn out to be completely useless human beings.

you might want to check you Quote's attribution

IIRC its from the chapter "Writers on government"

The title Thoughts on government was created by Charles Adams
and the date is later

who rose to the dizzy heights of accommodation officer in Pearl.

Imagine the panic at Mission Control (Pearl; Accom. Office)

Linen is often applied to a certain range of items which are not made
from the material linen. Just as one does not need to confine the use
of the linen basket for dirty items made from flax one can also wash
these items in public - without them necessarily being made from flax!

No, we were holidaying on Rhodes with the extended family at the time,
but Greece went into National Mourning.

The fires have been out for some time. Many trees were lost and hundreds
of animals killed and about 63 people died.

The new building developments on the scorched earth should be starting
soon because the old Government has dished out a load of building
permits just before the recent General Election. Fortunately, they were
voted back in.

We Brits also call them pillow cases.

People can say funny things through habit.

Me, for instance. The things you use to get light in your
house are usually called light bulbs. For some reason my
parents called them light globes, and I have to force myself to
call them bulbs, rather than globes.

Doug McDonald

That's nothing - where I come from what we call a battery is what most
people call a torch. The thing that goes inside and powers it is called a
charge.

A clock is called a knock (pronounce the first k) So you can go to the shop
and ask for a charge for your knock.

.....
CIGARETTES, WHISKEY AND WILD WILD WOMEN

cho: Cigarettes, whiskey and wild wild women
They'll drive you crazy, they'll drive you insane;
Cigarettes, whiskey and wild wild women
They'll drive you crazy, they'll drive you insane;

Once I was happy and had a good wife
I had enough money to last me for life
Then I met with a gal and we went on a spree
She taught me smokin' and drinkin' whiskee
(CHORUS)

Cigarettes are a blight on the whole human race
A man is a monley with one in his face;
Take warning dear friend, take warning dear brother
A fire's on one end, a fools on the t'other.
(CHORUS)

And now good people, I'm broken with faith
The lines on my face make a well written page
I'm weavin' this story -- how sadly but true
On women and whiskey and what they can do
(CHORUS)

Wild the cross at the head of my grave
For women and whiskey here lies a poor slave.
Take warnin' poor stranger, take warnin' dear friend
In wide clear letters this tale of my end.
(CHORUS)

.....and to a similar tune tune and in my mind a better chorus....
(a lament upon the evils of drinking and card-playing)

"If the ocean was whisky and I was a duck,
I'd dive to the bottom and never come up.
But the ocean ain't whisky, and I ain't a duck,
So I'll play Jack'o Diamonds and trust to my luck.

Jack'o Diamonds, Jack'o Diamonds, I cry.
If I don't get Jack'o Diamonds,
I surely will die."

Okay ... something more contemporary by Toby Keith:

We got winners,
We got losers,
Chain smokers and boozers,
We got yuppies,
We got bikers,
We got thirsty hitchhikers.
And the girls next door dress up like movie stars.
Mmmm, I love this bar.

We got cowboys,
We got truckers,
Broken-hearted fools and suckers,
We got hustlers,
We got fighters,
Early birds and all-nighters,
And the veterans talk about their battle scars.
Mmmm, I love this bar.

Chorus
I love this bar.
It's my kind of place.
Just walkin' through the front door puts a big smile on my face.
It ain't too far.
Come as you are.
Mmmm, I love this bar.

We got short skirts,
We got high techs,
Blue collar boys and rednecks.
We got lovers, Lotsa lookers,
I've even seen dancin' girls and hookers.
And we like to drink our beer from a Mason jar.
Mmmm, I love this bar...Yes, I do.

I like my truck.
I like my girl friend.
I like to take her out to dinner.
I like a movie now and then.

But, I love this bar.
It's my kind of place.
Just twirlin' around on the dance floor puts a big smile on my face.
No cover charge.
Come as you are.
Mmmm, I love this bar.

Mmmm, I love this old bar.

Also with verses extolling the virtues of the wanderer, would point
out that this guy lives with his parents but describes himself as an
"old cowpoke"

Jack o' diamonds

Oh Sally, oh Sally, 'tis for your sake alone
That I leave my old parents, my house and my home
That I leave my old parents, you cause me to roam
I'm an old rambling cowpoke and the range is my home

Jack O' diamonds, Jack O' diamonds, I know you of old
You've robbed by poor pockets of silver and gold
Oh, whiskey, you villain, you've been my downfall
You've punched me and kicked me, but I love you for all

My foot's in my stirrup, my bridle's in my hand
I'm going to leave Sally, the fairest in the land
Her Daddy don't like me, he says I'm too poor
He says I'm unworthy to enter her door *

Refrain

They say I drink whisky, my money is my own
And them that don't like me can leave me alone
I'll eat when I'm hungry, I'll drink when I'm dry
I'll do what I please and I'll live 'till I die *

Refrain

I'll get you up in my saddle, my quirt in my hand
I'll think of you, Sally when in some distant land
I'll think of you, Sally you caused me to roam
I'm an old rambling cowpoke and the range is my home

Refrain

Yep; that's why the discount shed was full of people buying pillowcases
and
other linen products. :)

not cotton?

or is linen a "function" as opposed to a "description"

You got it.

I buy my Egyptian cotton sheets at 'Yorkshire Linens'.

For what it's worth, from Wiki
However in 1999, the Bank of Scotland decided to stop using the
British Linen Bank name, renaming its merchant bank activities as Bank
of Scotland Treasury Services, later HBOS Treasury Services following
the Bank's merger with Halifax plc to form HBOS.

[edit] British Linen Advisors

In 2000, the British Linen Advisors was formed by the acquisition of
the corporate finance operations from the Bank of Scotland by an
independent group of businessmen.

I guess you consider yourself the "superior"?
