1900-1930 Census lookup

Legg inn av Michael » 02 okt 2007 03:20:28

Hello,

I'm looking for help in narrowing a death down. I'm hoping the census
records for Bay City, MI. will help me. I'm trying to locate the last
census that Robert Hunter was listed in. He was born in Scotland in
1867 and the name of his wife was Agnes. He also had at least 2
daughters Martha and Elizabeth. The daughters were married in 1911 and
1913 in Bay City. Agnes died in 1912.

TIA,

Michael

I can find Robert with his family in the 1910 census, but not in later
census records. His family included Agnes, daughters Martha, Lizzie,
Jeannette or Jeannetta, and sons John, Robert, and William.

Also, all of the children were born in Scotland. The information on the
1910 census states that Robert immigrated in 1903, and the rest of the
family came over in 1907 (it almost looks like 1901). There were also
three boarders living with them, also born in Scotland.

However, while I can't find Robert Hunter in Bay County, MI, I DO find a
Robert Hunter in Flint, Genesee County, MI in 1920. He's the right age,
same occupation (blacksmith), and born in Scotland. Wife is Mary, born
Michigan, and he has two sons living with him, William, born in Scotland
and whose age matches that of the William in 1910, and Thomas, aged 5,
who was born in Michigan. This same man is still in Genesee County in
the 1930 census.

I feel that this is your man - there's also a WWI Draft Registration
card for Robert Hunter, Jr. who is living in Flint, born 1896 in
Scotland and this matches with the Robert in the 1910 census. Looks as
though he was born in Airshire, Scotland?

There is a link on the Genesee County GenWeb site for vital records, and
there is a death for a Robert Hunter in 1943, but no details.

Hope that helps,
Cathy

Hi Michael,

Just looking quickly, I didn't find them in 1900 (possibly because they
hadn't immigrated yet at that point) but they did show up in 1910 and 1920
where Robert is apparently remarried to a Mary. Didn't find him in 1930 but
I didn't do an exhaustive search.

I can look again in the morning. Hope that helps.

Hello Alida,

Thank you for the lookup. The 1910 entry is the correct one, as 2 of
the boarders Patrick and James Cosgrove married the sisters Martha and
Elizabeth Hunter. I also believe the 1920 census entry you found is
also the correct one, as Robert's 1st wife died in 1912. This family
was also living in Flint as of 1930 and I was given a possible death
year of 1943. I really should re-subscibe to Ancestry so I don't have
to keep bothering people to help me narrow down info before I start
looking for it on microfilm.

Thanks again,

Michael
