I'm helping a friend of mine in starting to trace his family. We are
looking for software, preferable freeware, but have what I think is a
special need and am asking for advice from those with knowledge and
experience.
Part of his background is West Indian, and they often have
inside/outside children. We need software that can accommodate the
usual marriage(s), but also other children from outside the marriage and
often by multiple mothers/fathers.
Can anyone here offer any pearls of wisdom on this?
Thanks & regards

Legacy can handle this. Add the person as a "spouse", and thin
change the lable in "Family View."
You can make the label whatever you like.
For "outside" children, enter the children under the parent,
right click on the children and select "Children's Settings"
Select a child, then use "relationship status" to set the child's
exact relationship.

Almost every program will allow multiple families for one individual. Your
structure appears to be:
A+B (married): children C and D
A+E (unmarried): children F and G
H+B (unmarried): children I and J
If appropriate, you can also specify that A+B adopted F, G, H, and I.

It appears that our needs were not all that unusual for the software

Years ago, I used a DOS/Windows program and it was very rigid in how it

Thanks to all for their advice.

Re: Unusual ???? need in software
I think the ability to record children born to different partners is
not a big deal with most current software.
I have lots of distant ancestors who had children by several partners
- it was very common when early death was so frequent for settlers to
be widowed young - or abandoned - and they'd find someone new pretty
quick. After all, if spouse departed the scene for any reason, you
often needed a replacement to be able to keep farm and household
going.
I use Reunion for the Mac. It includes couples who are legally
married, common law, unmarried (i.e. its a hook up and they may not
have actually lived together), as well as status for divorced,
separation, annulled - and you can switch partners and record kids by
each partner.
