Top 5 Genealogy Software Programs

Legg inn av jaredprattfamily » 10 aug 2007 00:13:26

I'm wondering what are the top 5 most widely used genealogy software
programs (e.g. PAF, Family Tree Maker, etc.) and what percentage
(ballpark) of genealogists/family historians use these 5 programs
compared to all others? 50%, 75%, 90%?

Thanks.

If you read "Your Family Tree" issue 52 you will get a fairly good idea,

so go online and see if you can order the Magazine failing that you can
purchase a downloadable version.
Good luck.

You wouldn't get a percentage anywhere near 50% let alone higher. The
figure also wouldn't be wholly accurate because some people use more
than one genealogy software program. I uses both Legacy and PAF.

If you are looking for a program for your own use, the best advice is
to try all of them to see which one suits *you* best. All of those
available are either free or offer a time limited free trial.

By the time anyone compiles such stats, they're outdated.

Note that that list is by # of programs in use, and says
nothing about the relative quality of the program.

If you're looking for a program, try PAF and Legacy first --
they're free. I believe Brothers Keeper is still Share-ware
(try-before-you-buy). If you don't like the way any of
those three do things, try The Master Genealogist (TMG)
which takes a whole different approach (event-based).

If you're running MAC, there aren't 5 programs and the most
popular is Reunion. Far's I know, they're all lineage-based.

If you're running *ix, (and if you don't recognize it,
you're not), try Gramps.

If you're looking for platform-independent, there are a few
around but I don't remember the names.

If you're looking for a medical pedigree, GenoType.

I use Legacy and have been very pleased. I was able to try out the free
version first before I decided to purchase. I have used Legacy for several
years now and always upgrade when one comes out.

I researched all of them, and Legacy seemed to fit ** my ** needs. But
everyone's needs are not the same! So it's an individual choice.

Legacy does fall short in the area of drawing family trees. To fill in
there, I use TreeDraw Legacy. I really don't do the charts very much,
usually for gifts or if I'm doing a chart for a client.

Good luck with your search. Do try out all the demos you can to help you
make your choice.

Warmest Regards,

Donna

According to a survey done by World Vital Records, the following is
the results that they have compiled as of Aug 9th. Does anyone know of
GenBox Family History?

GenBox Family History: (35%)
Legacy Family Tree: (20%)
Master Genealogist: (19%)
Family Tree Maker: (9%)
Roots Magic: (3%)
Brother's Keeper: (2%)
Personal Ancestral File (PAF): (2%)

Thanks for everybody's input, this has been very interesting. I'm a
long-time user of PAF but was interested in what other people
generally use. Do you have a link to this survey by World Vital
Records...I can't imagine that GenBox is the market leader. If I had
to put the top 5-6 after this discussion and from what I hear about
most, I would say (not necessarily in order):

1. Family Tree Maker
2. PAF
3. Legacy
4. The Master Genealogist
5. Rootsmagic
6. Reunion (to cover the Mac users)

I would guess that at least 85% of users use at least one of those 6,
with the remaining 15% or so spread between other programs like
Ancestral Quest, Brother's Keeper, etc.

Sadly, about the only way you'd get reasonably
accurate figures would be to somehow track the
major retailers' SALES figures. That won't account
for use (how many of you have bought software that
looked good in the box/store, only to find it was
a piece of junk or just flat unsuitable?). I frankly
wouldn't know where to begin to obtain that info,
although I'd be reasonably sure it's "out there".
