Legal Age to Wed in Ohio in 1820 ?

Legg inn av jj206 » 27 jun 2007 04:41:45

Hi,

I was curious if there is a webpage that
describes the legal age to get married in
Ohio in the year 1820 ?

One of my relatives seems to have gotten
married on her 15th birthday. I checked
Cyndi's List in the Ohio area for awhile
and didn't see anything quite related, but
I thought I would ask here before I spent
too many hours looking there.

Thanks for any info. (^:

Legal age has little to do with it if there is parental consent.

I've found numerous ancestors (southeast US - AL, GA, NC, SC, VA) that
were married at 14.

14 is a holdover from older traditions where a person was considered
an "adult" (able to do a man's or woman's work) at 14 and considered a
"responsible" member of the community at 21 (thus the age of 21 for
voting, etc).

Thank you for the reply.

I think I will start adding certain religions into my google
search strings and see what comes up. (^:
