Help Please Family Tree Maker Question
I don't know much about software programs myself but my dad has been
researching his family for years and has hit a brick wall with a couple of
people. He uses an old "Family Ties" program to enter his info but doesn't
do a lot of research online. He knows how to work that program but does
nothing else on the computer. Someone sent him a letter telling him the
info he is looking for can be found on Family Tree Maker CD #28. I was
thinking about buying this software for him but before I do, I want to find
out if the CDs come with it? I went to their website but it isn't clear
whether CDs come with it. Can someone help me out in understanding Family
Tree Maker? Where does the info come from that is on the CDs? Many thanks.

You might not need to buy the software, but before you
decide check Family Ties to see if it supports something
called "GedCom" ... if it doesn't, you may as well buy
Family Tree Maker -- look on e-bay for the best prices.
If Family Ties DOES support GedCom, then look around for the
Random Acts of Genealogical Kindness website or for the
Books we Own website; in either place you can ask for a
lookup to see if what's on the CD meshes with what your dad
already has. You'll need to provide either place with a
real functioning e-mail address so they can respond to your
request.
You might lead your dad around some of the many
free-genealogical data sites before you spend money, too.

Before buying a CD (should it come to that), be sure you are looking

Thanks for this info! The letter my dad received says "The info you are
looking for is on Family Tree Maker CD#-28". Do you have to purchase FTM in
order the view the CD archives? Basically, he's just trying to find out who
one of his ancestor's father was. Some research points to one person but at
the same time could point in another direction. The names were very common
(Thomas, John, David, Matthew) and many cousins, sons, uncles, etc. had the
same name. My dad (bless his heart!) starts talking about it, trying to
explain what he's looking for and when he starts naming names my head just
starts to spin. I need to go get his binder while he and my mom are on
vacation and at least that way I'll have the info I need to figure out who
is tied to whom. But thank you for the leads you've provided here. I
really appreciate it.
