Ancestry 1850 Census Update

Legg inn av Bruce Remick » 13 mar 2007 16:10:29

In Ancestry.com's list of latest additions, they list the 1850 Census as
having been "updated". Does anyone have a clue as to what specifically has
been updated? I thought they already had complete images and an every-name
index for each state. As a researcher of a single surname, I don't relish
the thought of having to go back to re-search every state in the 1850 census
to see if there might be new additions if that's not what they mean by
"updated". I hate it when they do that "update!" thing but never indicate
what has been added.

Well, I don't know the official answer, but, I have sent ancestry.com 5
typos and spelling errors and one would hope that they include that in
an update. Also people find missing pages or pages that need to be
rescanned or photographed...etc... One would assume they also catch
their own mistakes, so maybe now that 1850 is updated, they will work
their way forward or back to other censuses. (^:

Where do you report an error on their data?
"Contact us" doesn't really have a section for it.

I've never tried. I figured Ancestry wouldn't bother about making database
corrections, minor or major, to their databases. As long as they can claim
they are merely offering databases they have been authorized to upload, the
onus is on the originator of the information to solicit corrections from the
public.

I believe you CAN make additions and corrections on their OneWorldTree site.

Maybe Hugh has had better results from his attempts to contact Ancestry with
corrections.

I've made many name corrections- to both transcription errors, and
enumerator errors. [Right now only names get corrected.]

I might have just been lucky, but several of the
corrections/additional names have shown up in a month or two.

There is a link for corrections on the information's page. It has a
space for comments and I always explain why I think the info they have
is wrong- or why I think an additional name should be listed.

It's mandatory. If you leave the field blank, your submission is
rejected, and you're asked to enter something there.

I've never really paid attention to this option before. I'll look for the
link next time. Might save someone else from having to search through all
males in California named John, born in Maine within 2 years of 1839, in
order to find an elusive John Remick transcribed as "John Bimerk".

ancestry offers images of original sources
and indexed or transcribed as best as their budget allows

they could offer double keyed transcriptions
but the price would close them down by forcing subscriptions up

my rule is if as an SKS I find an error I mark the head of family with a
correction for the general good

for my own I mark and correct every individual
the all name index gets updated every 500 corrections

ancestry.com users are a world wide community who give employment to at
least 800 people mostly in Provo
who want to keep their jobs by pleasing us and getting our renewals by
uploading new material

Cooperation is more useful than agression
our subscriptions also sponsor freebmd.org.uk
and rootsweb.com
which are freebies created by volunteers
