My husband's family has a mystery, and I am hopeful someone may be able to
help.
The family has one legend that John Postlethwaite (who said he was born in
Quebec) abandoned a first marriage in NYstate around Ogdensburg and married
his second wife Maria Cairns Brown; changed his last name to Brown to
conceal his location and the couple ended up settling in Ontario in
Peterborough county, near Norwood. The sanitized version was that Maria was
a woman of some means, and when she married Postlethwaite, she wanted all of
her children to have the last name so he voluntarily changed to make her
happy.
I have searched in NY for every possible spelling for Postlethwaite, and I
have also searched for Maria Cairns Brown ( born 1825 in Ireland) and her
first husband Thomas David Brown and their children: Annie J born 1845 in
Quebec, Thomas born 1848 in Quebec, David born 1850 in Quebec, and William
who may have been born in either Quebec or Ogdensburg NY in about 1852.
Two of the children from the second marriage (John P and his wife Maria C
Brown) were born in NY: John James born in 1855, and Maria Caroline born in
1857. The others were all born in Ontario according to the 1871 census for
Ontario.
Sorry this has been such a long post, but if anyone could give me some ideas
I would greatly appreciate it.

Re: Postlethwaite to Brown
The GenWeb site for St. Lawrence County has quite a few vital records
indexes, and in the one for the Methodist church in Ogdensburg, there is
a record for when Maria and John joined the church (1851 for John, 1852
for Maria) and the baptism of John James Brown in 1854 (either his birth
date or the baptism date is Aug 21, 1854). John 'left by letter' on Oct
1, 1855, and Maria 'left by letter' on May 3, 1856.
http://freepages.genealogy.rootsweb.com ... OM_A_Z.htm
Of course, it's possible that the John Brown mentioned in separate
entries is not the same as the husband of Maria Brown. I don't see
anything there for Maria Caroline, but her birth date is after the time
that Maria had left the church roster. unfortunately, the pages don't
state what church Maria joined when she left.
The URL for the GenWeb site itself is:
http://www.rootsweb.com/~nystlawr/index.html
You might find their marriage in the index of one of the other churches,
or a baptism for William Brown - but not all of the records are
necessarily on-line yet. I did not see anything for Postlethwaite at all.
Good luck,
Cathy

Bonnie, found a few things you might be interested in. For starters,
the death registrations of both your John and Maria.
Death of John Brown, died Oct 1 1907, born in Quebec, living on King
Street in Norwood, carpenter, married, Methodist, died of gastric
trouble and dysentery
Death of Maria Brown, Aug 8 1912, clearly the right woman, born in
Ireland Feb 2 1824, father's name Thomas Cairns, mother Mary Maxwell.
Living on King Street in Norwood at time of death.
Death reported by son Maxwell Brown. Death from "old age".
So, looks like Maria's maiden name was Cairns.
Then a bunch of marriage registrations for their kids with a few
interesting bits about where they were born. i.e. John James was
married twice and both registrations say he was born in Ogdensburg NY,
and his brother Thomas was apparently born in "Port Neuf" in Quebec.
Abe Maxwell Brown, born in Norwood about 1865. Son of John P. Brown
and Maria Carnes Brown, married Maggie Jane Scott, age 25, daughter of
Abraham Scott and Mary MacKay, 26 July 1893 in Peterborough.
Same guy again, Maxwell Brown, born Norwood about 1865, son of John P.
Brown and Maria Cairnes Brown, married Mary McConnel, age 27, daughter
of Robert McConnel and Christiana Michell Feb 25 1903, Peterborough.
David Brown, living in Asphodel, seems to have been born there but
this is unlikely to be true if what other sibs marriages said, born
about 1849, married Margaret Ann Crawford daughter of John and
Margaret Crawford, Oct 9 1872 Peterborough
John James Brown born Ogdensburg US, about 1855 married Barbara Lynn,
daughter of Joseph and Ann Lynn 13 Nov 1878. Peterborough
John James Brown, same guy as above, this second marriage registration
also says he was born in Ogdensburg NY, about 1854, married Helen
Hetherington, daughter of Robert and Rebecca Hetherington, 5 Nov 1887,
in Peterborough.
Thomas Brown, son of John P. Brown and Maria Brown, born in Port Neuf,
Quebec, abt 1852 , married Anne Jane Lynn, daughter of Joseph and Ann

William Cains Brown, son of John Paterson Brown and Maria Brown, born
in Canada abt 1852, married Ella Maude Moore, daughter of Charles and
Annie Moore, 13 June 1880, Northumberland,

Thank you for all of the information. It will be helpful in filling in the
dates for all of the children. I am still unsuccessful in tracking down
anything in regards to the Postlethwaite last name.
I googled Port Neuf but got nothing specific enough to go in a certain
direction....
Once again thanks for your help.

Re: Postlethwaite to Brown
Could his surname have been Paterson? I note that some of the listings
that name your John P. use Paterson as his "P"
Portneuf is a county. There is a well known Peter Paterson in the area
who was a lumberman, owner of a mill etc. at Pointe aux Trembles, in
Portneuf.
"Peter Paterson, about 1790, left Whitby, England, to seek his fortune
in
Canada. His skill as a ship builder--his integrity of character and
business habits, pointed him out as a fit agent--later on as a partner
in
a wealthy Baltic firm of London merchants who still have
representatives
in the colony. At the time of Napoleon's continental blockade, the
English
Government, seeing that the Baltic was closed for the supply of timber
for
the navy, gave out a large contract to Messrs. Henry and John Usborne--
of
London--for masts and oak. Usborne & Co., employed Mr. P. Paterson to
dress and ship this timber. A timber limit license, of portentous
import,
authorizing the cutting of oak and masts for the navy in all British
North
America, was issued. Under authority of this license, Mr. Paterson
partly
denuded the shores of Lake Champlain as well as the Thousand Islands,
of
their fine oak. Mr. Paterson was the first to float oak in rafts to
Quebec. He built a large mill at Montmorency, having exchanged his St.
George street house for the mill site at Montmorency. His mills have
since
attained to great importance."

Very interesting. I have come to suspect that the Postlethwaite last name
may have been an invention on someone's part, but that is all
conjecture. They lived on Patterson St in Ogdensburg,
)(as stated in the
Method Church records that were listed in Huntersglen's post to me) so maybe
that's where the name was pulled from. I look at the date of your
lumberman's birthdate, and it would mesh with JP's birthdate of 1825. John P
was a carpenter of some note also....
Maria's family, according to family legend owned shipping vessels out of
Ireland, and she was a woman of some worth.
I appreciate anything that you send my way.
