help dating a photo

Actually it's three stills from an 8mm movie, not a photo...

It's the 40's, but that's as much as I can tell.

The two younger ladies are wearing slacks (http://dumes.net/BandE2.jpg)
and the double button top (http://dumes.net/BandE1.jpg) one of them has
seems unusual to me. The slacks the ladies are wearing are very full --
reminds me of Katherine Hepburn, though I suppose it's a cliche to say
that a woman wearing slacks reminds one of Katherine Hepburn.

I played with the contrast on this one (http://dumes.net/BandE3.jpg) in
hopes of seeing more detail of the hairstyle, but these are from an 8mm
movie...

Any help is deeply appreciated.

Regards,
Bruce

Are you sure about the 1940s?

Double rows of buttons were popular through the 1940s; the two younger
ladies wear trouser suits that wouldn't be out of place for the late
1940s (sloping rather than padded shoulders, tight waist) or even 1950.

But the lady in pink has a hemline that wouldn't have been seen IMHO
much before 1950. The fellow's short tie also suggests early 1950s to
me.

It's hard to see the hairstyles with all the shadow but they look more
early 1950s to me than late 1940s.

My best guess: 1948 - 1952.

Thanks! The reason I'd tend to lean towards the late 40's is because
my grandfather switched to 16mm sometime around 1950 or 51. I guess
it's possible that he was using both cameras for a while, depending on
availability of film, but I'm inclined to think not, knowing my grandfather.

I'll show you the movie sometime if you like! :-)

I have a photo of my father from late 1947, perhaps early 1948, and his
tie is much longer than the one that the man is wearing in these stills.
However, some other family photographs, from around 1948 to sometime
in the early 1950s (51 or 52, maybe 53) has men wearing shorter ties,
such as that shown in your stills (If I knew the date my cousin was
born, I could give you the exact year because she's an infant in the
pictures). It could also be that the man just did a lousy job of tying
the tie and didn't care that it was too short.

The hem of the one dress though, is much shorter than the hems on the
dresses of photos I've got of my aunts and mother from the late 1940s,
although hemlines would vary according to where lived (a woman in a
larger city would, in my opinion and from looking at family photos, wear
something more modern than those women living in rural areas), age (an
older woman would tend to stick to older styles either because she feels
it's more respectable or more fitting for 'her age').

I wouldn't be comfortable going with a 1940s date unless you knew for
sure that these people lived in a major metropolitan area. I'd be more
comfortable with a date range of 1950-1954.

Those other guys must have a much better graphics card than
I've got. I don't see any slacks anywhere except on the
dude with the tie (which I agree is more 1950s than 1940s --
even the width of it).
