In the 1850 census there's a James Grimes in Belmont County OH, age 50, a
farmer born in Maryland, married to Elizabeth, born in c. 1802 in Maryland,
plus a passel of children, one of whom is Thomas, born. c. 1833 in Ohio.

Let me know whether this is close enough and I'll send the image.

The closest that I can find is a family in Union township, Belmont
County, OH. The ages of James and Thomas match what you gave, but
Elizabeth is younger.

Year: 1850; Census Place: Union, Belmont, Ohio; Roll: M432_661; Page: 464
James Grimes, 49, Farmer, born MD
Elizabeth, 47, born MD
Margaret, 26, born MD
Henry, 18, carpenter, born O
Thomas, 17, carpenter, born O
James, 15, born O
Lucinda, 13, born O
Mathew, 10, born O
Mary C. or G., 9, born O
Landon, 8, born O
William, 6, born O
Martha, 4, born O
Lydia, 1, born O
(the enumerator used 'O' instead of 'OH')

In 1860, Thomas Grimes is living in Wheeling township, Belmont County:
Year: 1860; Census Place: Wheeling, Belmont, Ohio; Roll: M653_936; Page:
120;
Thomas Grimes, 26, carpenter, born OH
Elizabeth, 24, born OH
Parker, 6, born OH
John C., 3, born OH
Isaac, 2, born OH
Sarah, 3/12, born OH

I wish the enumertor would have put widow or widower designations with
people, but I didn't find James in the 1870, so it's reasonable to think
that he was dead by the 1860 census since Elizabeth is shown there with
the rest of their children.

Hope that helps,
Cathy

It's them -- what's the citation? I've got HQ to view, but
it doesn't have the 1850 index.

Thanks!

Great! Thanks, Cathy. Yes, James died in 1857 but she
did't die until 1887. I knew there had to be more children
than I found!

How can Elizabeth be only 24 years old in 1860?

Just curious. Not trying to be difficult.

That's a different Elizabeth. The one I show in 1860 is the wife of the
son, Thomas, and not his mother. His mother is also in Belmont County
in that census, with a good majority of her children.

It does get bad when sons marry women with the same names as their
mothers, although it could be worse, and Thomas could have also named a
daughter Elizabeth (which he might have done, I didn't look past the
1860 census) <grin>.

Are you confusing Elizabeths, the latter is presumably James' wife.
