Might be a family get-together: suggestions for distributing

Legg inn av Michael Horowitz » 16 feb 2007 22:24:52

I've been gathering bits and pieces and records and pictures for the
last 10 years. Occassionally I'd meet up with a relative we'd share
memories and I'd write it down. I've also constructed and extensive
chart using FTM.

The possibility exists that some parts of the family might get
together this summer and I'd like to give them each a copy (CD) of the
major items I've located. No one but me has FTM, and I'm not aware of
a piece of software that will read-only an FTM file.

If anyone else has been faced with this opportunity before, I'd like
to hear suggestions for how you might have organized and presented
the material - Mike

You could give it to them as a GEDCOM file along with a copy of

GedView (see http://www.geocities.com/tmarkjames/GedView.html and
various other URLs ). As a read-only programme it shouldn't complain
when using a file on CD and the data will be available for importing
into other programmes should any of them want to do a bit more than
just have a quick look at the information.

You might check out Mudcreek Software and have a look at GenViewer. There is
a free light version available limited to general, family and individual
views as well as a free CD-Rom version.
http://www.mudcreeksoftware.com/

I tried it to read a TMG file and it read the file and would display the
info, but it had a bug in the find function. I don't know what kind of
support you'd get if you need it. I detailed the problem and included data
to help pinpoint the problem, but never even got an acknowledgement back.

Another option: I don't know FTM, but Legacy will generate
webpages. Burn that to a CD, and they'll have no problem
nagivating it with their web browser.

Save appropriate reports from FTM as .pdf files, and put them on the disc.

Yopu can cuse the rfree program PDFCreator to save the reports and other
material, from word processors etc.

I save files from Legacy as either HTML or plain text documents, open
them in Open Office then export (save) them as a .pdf which can then
be burnt to CD or DVD. Open Office is free and handles exporting
(saving) to .pdfs well. Legacy is supposed to be able to generate
..pdfs but I've not been able to do so.

Works fine here.

But HTML is a better format for CDrom: it's interactive.
Depending on the template used, the viewer can click on links
that take them to new pages of information.

PDF is good if one is planning to print reports, but for
'online' viewing, it's very tedious to page through each page to
read about the family connections.

You have to have the Deluxe Edition to create PDFs in Legacy. Do you
have that?

If you'd please write directly to me at Support@LegacyFamilyTree.com,
we can discuss this off list. Please be sure to let me know which
version and build of Legacy that you're using (Help > General
Information). Also, let me know what error message you're getting, if
any, when you try to create the PDF.

I b'lieve FTM writes a book from your data. Have it write
the book (to .rtf if you can) then tart it up with Word/WP,
and publish as HTML. Burn the HTML on a CD for the
computerized family and print the Word/WP file to paper for
the others. If it's not too massive, printing it in booklet
format makes it seem more like a "book" and Staples, Kinkos
and OfficeDepot will saddle-bind (i.e., staple it) for a
modest amount.

Our family organization has also found charts to be popular
-- a descendants' chart that shows all the descendants, for
instance, is signed near their name by everyone attending
and stored.

That's a selling point for upgrading for sure

getting too complicated.

Think it's time to upgrade, see if those capabilities are sufficient,
then go from there. Thanks - MIke

Thanks for the suggestion; I downloaded GedView and am playing with
it.
However, I like the decendent tree picture I get from FTM; I'll
upgrade my ver 9 to the latest and see if the .pdf format will address
what I'm looking for. - MIke
