Help finding Josephine Green

Legg inn av clifto » 15 feb 2007 06:23:27

This is presumed to be my father's father's mother. The last name comes
from various places; best is Louisiana Marriages 1718-1925, and others
probably stem from there. I believe she's his second of three wives.

My only find is in 1900 census population schedule for Bay St. Louis,
Hancock Co., MS, SD 6 ED 28 5th supervisor's beat, married to J.W.
She's shown born Jan 1866, age 34, father born Sweden, mother born
Mississippi. I've used up every idea I've had since August and that's
all I have.

(For those who've noticed my saga, the Walter T. shown on that census
page is the grandfather I started looking for around last July and found
through help here.)

This is pretty far fetched but it's the only thing I've found that's a
possibility. The following family is in 1880 St. Tammany Parish, LA:

Household:

Name Relation Marital Status Gender Race Age Birthplace Occupation
Father's Birthplace Mother's Birthplace
John RHODES Self M Male W 61 PA Oysterman PA PA
Mary RHODES Wife M Female W 29 MS Housekeeping MS MS
Mary RHODES Dau S Female W 9 LA PA MS
Louisa RHODES Dau S Female W 9 LA PA MS
Joseph RHODES Son S Male W 7 LA PA MS
Agnes RHODES Dau S Female W 5 LA PA MS
William RHODES Son S Male W 6M LA PA MS
Edward VIENA Other S Male W 16 LA Sailoring LA LA
Mary GREEN Other S Female W 16 LA At Home SWITZ MS

Source Information:

The 16 year old Mary Green may be your Josephine. In the census she's
described as a half daughter to John Rhodes, which I guess means a
step-daughter. I've tried to find the family in 1870 without any luck.
There's a marriage record from Hancock Co, MS in 1869 for a John Rhodes and
Mrs. Samantha Green which may be for the above couple. In 1900 in Bay St.
Louis, MS at least two of the Rhodes children are listed. Agnes married a
Lux and is there with her family. Living with her is a sister who wasn't
born until 1883. So John and Mary Samantha? Rhodes may have moved back to
Hancock Co, MS and died there. That could be why your Sharp family was there
in 1900.

Like I said it's far fetched and may have no basis in truth. Mary Green's
father was born in Switzerland, not Sweden like your Josephine's but there
are very few people in MS or LA from Sweden or Switzerland. Maybe someone
else can locate John and Samantha Rhodes or John and Mary Rhodes in the 1870
census. That might answer the question about this Mary Green.

Since Josephine was pretty young when she married J.W. Sharp, have you
obtained a copy of the marriage record? She would have been under 18 so
there may be a parental permission attached to it. I don't know the laws in
Louisiana for underage marriages or if they even had such laws.

Following up on Doug's find - there is a Matthias Green in Hancock
County, MS in the 1850 Federal Census. He's listed as being from
Switzerland. He's also in the Mississippi Marriage Index at
ancestry.com, marrying a Martha Cameron in 1865. However, I can't find
him in the 1860 Federal Census for either MS or LA.

There are a few volunteers at the Hanock County GenWeb site who will do
look-ups for a few of the churches in the county, and perhaps you'll
luck out and find Josephine that way:
http://www.rootsweb.com/~mshancoc/

There are also two people listed as researching the Green surname.

I have not been able to locate the below John Rhodes or a Samantha
Rhodes in the 1870 Federal Census, in either MS or LA.

Here is the GenWeb site for St. Tammany, LA - they've got a lot of
cemeteries listed, but there's not a search engine for them:

I was looking at that. Another problem is that to all appearances,
Josephine was born in Mississippi. I can't explain the apparent moving
back and forth between LA and MS. But my gut tells me not to rule this
one out yet.

It's weird that although she was born in MS and is living there in this
census, all the kids but one (even the one-year-old) were born in LA.

I have some marriages in which the bride appears to be as young as 13.
I haven't started gathering records yet; hoping to have a little more
information (accurate dates, etc.) before I start firing money orders
southward. :)

It helped to download the .txt files for ready searching on my own turf. :)

Thanks for the other ideas, too.
